Clik Clank or hammer
I have a 1993 Ranger with 170,000 miles always done oil at 2 to 3 thousand miles in the last two thousand the truck started to click a little Now in the last few days it's started to get real loud to a almost clanking or Hammering when it's in gear it's the worst by far.
I switched to Sense-tic oil about two months ago and that did nothing to help. One other thing the noise seams to be coming from the Back of the Engine when it's in gear " It's a Automatic 4x4" out side the noise is a lot less than when sitting in side the cab it seams to be coming from the rear of the Engine

Welcome to the forum
Reads like transmission problem not engine problem, i.e. " when it's in gear it's the worst by far"
4.0l OHV is a very reliable engine, not that they never break, it is just that an automatic with 170k miles is more likely to be the problem

when in gear I have been told it,s ether the C converter or a Timing problem

No
Pull transmission, and rebuild or replace, and you always get a new torque converter when you do that so.........
When transmission is out also remove flexplate and check it for cracks and replace rear main seal, it is a cheap seal but hard to get to, so best to replace it

Bang on it when it is cold with rubber mallet or piece of wood, listen for rattling noise.
But "in gear" wouldn't matter if Cat converter was broken internally, it would rattle any time engine was running.
