Need help

84 Ford ranger 2.8 four speed overdrive standard four wheel drive lock in hubs I need a transmission that will interchange with mine some say tk 5 and transfer case I need to know what year to get so I can get my son in his first rig

Yes, the TK5 was used in 2.8l Rangers with 2WD and 4WD in 1984
4WD used the BW1350 transfer case and 4WD TK5 transmission

If it had a TK4, no overdrive, originally, then drive shafts may not work, TK5 was slightly longer I think

2WD and 4WD transmissions have different tail shafts
TK5 was also used on 4cyl Rangers, and bell housing wouldn't fit 2.8l engine, so you would need 2.8l bellhousing

2.8l engine used same bellhousing bolt pattern as the 2.9l and 4.0l Ranger engines.
So you could use the newer M5OD-R1 manual transmissions and transfer cases(BW1354) from 1996 or older Ranger.
You would also need the flywheel and starter motor from that engine size.
And drive shafts for your gen 1 model(1992 or earlier), i.e. regular or extend cab
