Disc brake conversion
Disc brake conversion
If I want to switch my 2000 ranger 4x4 which has drum brakes on the rear, I have a rear end I took out of a 2004 explorer with disc brakes ,do I need to use the hole rear end or can I just use the brake plate and swap to my rear end ?
I was going to do the same thing til I heard that the outer housing is some how different. So you would have to swap the whole thing in.
other option that I’m going to do is use 94 Mustang got or cobra rear disc brakes.
other reason I’m going the mustang route is I learned that my ranger came stock with lsd.

You need to use the whole rear end. The explorers use a 31 spline rear end. Ranger use 28 spline.
Other 28 spline rear ends with disc brake (like a mustang) you can steal just the parts needed for the brake swap.

Check the owners manual. 4W-ABS uses a different fuse then the 2W-ABS. This is the how-to I used to do my expo axle swap. Ford Explorer 8.8-Inch Rear Axle ? Swap : The Ranger Station
I got the aftermarket mounting brackets for 87-93 mustang SN-95 5 lug conversion. Then everything else is stock 94-up Mustang caliper, rotors. I had a pair of braided lines made to go from the stock hard line to the caliper. I used some spacers and was able to use the stock emergency brake cables. I have a pic in my album of the finished install.
