Brake Bracket floating pins
Brake Bracket floating pins
I have a 1998 Ranger and putting on new pads and got the rotors turned. On the 2 floating pins on the bracket that the caliber bolts screw into do those simply pull straight out so you can clean and lube them. Also can I use Sil Glide silicone brake caliber grease on those pins.
Yes, pull them straight out. Clean them up with brake cleaner. Also clean out the holes they came out of best you can. A gun cleaning bore brush works great, twisted paper towel if you don’t have one. Clean it all with brake cleaner, lube the pins and replace them.
Would Sil Glyde silicone grease be a good choice to use for lubing the pins. This is what Chris Fix uses on the moving parts of his Ranger brakes. These little pins do not move much at all so is it necessary to do this. It is a 98 Ranger with 105K on it so thought it might be ok for another 50k or so. Just not sure never done this.
I am not familiar with that product. I would only use a quality grease made for disc drake systems, and I would highly recommend pulling the pins, cleaning them up and greasing them. It will literally take you 5 minutes a side
Sil glyde is a good brand of brake lube. And yes they absolutely need to be cleaned and lubed. Those pins are what allow the caliper to float over the brake rotor, without lube they will seize and your caliper will just jam against the brake rotor and destroy your brakes. You also need to lube all the contact points on the back and edges of the pads.
My pads have the anti rattle metal shims on the back of the pads, so do I put a small amount of Sil-Glyde on that plate, the rim of the pistons, and the edges of the pads and that should be good right.
Yes, a little lube in each of those places is good
I have twice now had the ATF come out of the overflow cap on my power steering bowl. The first time I noticed it at random. However, I was taking my old shocks off today and I noticed it again. So I turned the key on but did not start it and turned the wheel back and forth and a lot came out the top of the cap. Is this because I have too much ATF in there.

Yes I know 67 years old and did not grow up with computers. Have a little heart. Just trying to get info.
when the steering is at full lock to either side, fluid gets pushed back into the resivoir so there must be a certain amount of empty space to accommodate this or it will overflow.
if it's coming out bubbly and frothy like shooting a deer through the lung then air is leaking into the system somewhere. This would generally be accompanied by some whining noises from the pump.
WOW, Now I know why I have one hanging lower then the other..... Busting ***** LOL. The first time I had fluid coming out I did suck out the fluid until normal levels. However, after doing this and getting the fluid level where it needs to be it happened again. Is it best to check hot or cold because the dip stick says both. The fluid is coming out normal not foamy.
