wheel color matching body
wheel color matching body
Hello all, The steel wheels on my 05 are looking rather rough. So in looking at my options I can either replace or paint. I like the oldtime truck look and had a crazy thought. Maybe painting the wheels to match the body with the "chrome" lug covers. Has anyone does this? Any pics out there?
I'm just in the process of doing this now.
I've had them sand blasted and I'm prepping and painting.
You can also have a body shop do the painting, or in my case I just buy the custom made spray balms at my local auto store to match the body paint.
I like painted steel rims better then alloy.
Easier to look after.
These are the rims that I have known as "8 Oval"
I painting them to match my truck _ Sun Rise Tan, if I remember correctly.
My spare is done, when I get a chance I will place it in front of one of the other wheels with the centre cap and take a photo.

The 8 oval holes have a sharp edge on them _ sort of.
Any job is 99% prep and 1% finish.
Even after sandblasting I spent a fair amount of time with a dremel tool smoothing and grinding edges.
There seem to be a lot burs on the edge of the rim too.
An air compressor is almost a necessity here to blow off any debris.
It depends how fussy one is I guess.
What ever you do it will be better then the factory finish, there's like two thin coats of poor quality lacquer on them.

I've just done the spare so far.
The paint doesn't quite match as the truck still has the original paint, so it's a little faded.
When I bought the truck the jack and spare was missing and even the original rims, what ever they were.
Some goof put on some old rusty Chrysler Cordova rims and then some cheap plastic covers on top of that.
I'll be changing the tire to from a 235/75 to 215/75 too.
It's supposed to have 225/70's on it.
The 235's are so bloody wide and fat, I hate them.
Most useless tires I've ever had, even more so in the snow.
Didn't matter how much weight I had in the box, it just slid over the place and had very little traction.
