Ford ranger old clicks
Yes, as said above the Battery Light ON when engine was running was telling you the Alternator was no longer working.
Battery Light should be ON when you turn on the key, then it should go OFF when engine starts.......IF alternator is working as it should.
An Alternator supplies ALL the electricity to run your vehicle while engine is running.
The Battery is ONLY USED to start the engine, that's it, its sole purpose is to start the engine.
If alternator stops working then the Battery will start to be drained until it doesn't have enough voltage(amperage) to start the engine again, so you just get a "click", or a "click, click, click".
When you drive a vehicle with Battery Light on for more than 3 or 4 hours then you will have most likely ruined the battery, drained it down too far so it will no longer hold a charge.
So in your case I would plan on replacing both alternator and Battery
BUT..........Alternator could just have a bad wire or fuse so that needs to be checked BEFORE buying a new one.
Battery is probably "toast" so budget for a new Battery.
Alternator wiring can be tested with a Volt Meter, only 3 wires to test, very simple to do
