Hey y'all, I have the 1994 With the 4.0 V6. I have an oil leak and it appears to be coming from the oil pan gasket. My Haynes is saying that I need to pull the engine, or at the very least unbolt it from the chassis and lift it. Can I get it out without doing all of that? It looks like it might come out, but I can't tell for sure, and I don't want to get halfway done and find out that I really do need to pull the engine. I don't have time for that, and I can deal with the leak if it comes to that. Thanks.

2WD or 4x4?

Not that it matters, but 4x4 is even harder, lol.

Yes you have to pull the engine or lift the engine a bit, about 6" or so, which means unhook the transmission as well
The oil pump pickup is at the bottom of the lowest part of the oil pan, so............once the bolts are out the front of the pan must be able to drop down enough to clear oil pump pick up to pull it out.

If you think you have enough room you could drop the pan just an inch or two and use some RTV around the old gasket, not too much, and just on the outside edge of pan.
If RTV gets inside pan it forms little ***** that clog up oil pickup screen, a little is not a big deal, just do it carefully.

There is no pressure in the oil pan, just splashed and dripping oil, gets on the gasket, so you don't need alot to reseal it.

And heads up, change PCV Valve every 2 or 3 oil changes, PCV system actually causes negative air pressure in the valve covers and oil pan areas, so PREVENTS oil leaks

Thanks for the info, that was exactly what I needed to know. I was considering the RTV route, but wasn't sure if my old gasket could survive being removed and put back on. The truck sat for a year and a half, (blown heads, that was my first real experience with fixing major engine problems) so I think the gasket may have dried up and broken then.

Where is the PCV valve on the 4.0? I want to change mine immediately as per RonD's advice.

 

It is on the driver side valve cover. Should be a little hose running from your intake to that valve cover. Take that off and the PCV valve sticks up under it. Just grab it with a pair of pliers and pull it out. It doesn't screw in or anything. Just pull it straight out.

I never want to use gallons of solvents to clean a $4 item but sometimes soaking a part in Simple Green or Purple Power is all that's needed.

I cannot for the life of me locate any such hose. Is it more fore or aft? Is it on the side of the valve cover near the intake manifold or is it on top?

I'm obviously new to the engine but there is so much wiring and plastic things on the driver's side.

I've even tried Youtube videos.....honestly, some guys should proof their vids. "Right down there...you can't see it (shake the camera-play with lights and make shadows)".

Anyone with a description? Also, some vids show silver PCV valves from the '60's and the one in the RockAuto catalog is black plastic and has deep threads cast into it.

On mine it is on the top of the driver side valve cover, near the back (let's assume that when I say back I mean closer to the cab than the front of the vehicle). The hose runs from the back side of the intake straight down to the valve cover. Mine is like 3 inches long. It should be the only thing protruding from that valve cover.
