2004 4.0 Removal
Hey guys, i would like to know a good step by step list to help me out with removing the motor from my truck. The motor must be replaced and will be upgrading to a 2011 engine instead of an 04, any recommendations will help!
One thing to remember, the weight if the engine is what is hold the front springs/torsion bars down right now, thats what sets your body height now
When you start to lift out the engine the front of the truck will start to come up until it is at full suspension extension, and that can ruin you whole plan on lifting engine high enough to get it out, lol.
You can chain the front suspension at its present height, so it only comes up a few inches
You can remove the front tires to lower the front end to give the needed clearance for your lift

I remember the first time I pulled an engine, and thats when I learned that lesson, lol, a DOH moment
You know its going to happen but you don't think about until it does
Like my first automatic trans install, bolted torque converter ON the flexplate then slid transmission on, got it all lined up but had to use the bell housing bolts to get it to seat flush to engine, wouldn't slide all the way on, a clunk or two later after tightening the bolts it slid on all the way
Got everything back together, fired up the engine and..................NO GO, lol, no reverse no forward, WTF!!!
Freshly rebuilt trans and THEY must have F'ed it up...................pulled it out again, pissed off....................
Thats when I learned the lesson of SEATING the torque converter IN the transmission's front pump and then bolting transmission to the engine and THEN bolting torque converter to the flexplate, I had broken the front pump, and thats what makes the transmission GO
Cost me a bit to learn that lesson, lol, full disassembly needed to replace it
In fairness when I pulled out the transmission the torque converter stayed bolted to the flexplate and didn't hurt any thing so.......................lol, live and learn
