1996 Ranger PCM/ECU replacement instructions
1996 Ranger PCM/ECU replacement instructions
Looking for instructions for disconnecting current computer and installing a programmed computer for a 1996 Ranger. The vehicle was switched from automatic to standard transmission by a previous owner. It still has original computer that reads out automatic codes. It starts but seems to not be reciving enough to stay running well at 1st gear and idling, but can't figure out till it has codes that match the transmission. I purchased one off eBay that is for a standard that was programmed to the VIN.
Welcome to the forum
Hopefully the previous owner didn't also swap engine sizes when he swapped transmission type, or VIN won't match
8th digit in VIN tells the engine size
A = 2.3l 4 cylinder
U or V = 3.0l V6
X = 4.0l V6
Unhook battery FIRST
Then unbolt connector for PCM's wiring harness on firewall, disconnect it and move if back out of the way, may need to pull off 2nd nut or bolt
Unbolt the two outside nuts on the studs in firewall and pull out old PCM
Reverse to install "new" PCM
Hook battery back up
When you start the engine it won't idle perfectly, it will hunt for best idle setting for a few drive cycles
Driving it is the best way for this to happen
1 drive cycle = engine temp getting above 160deg, and then cooling off below 120deg
You need about 5 - 8 drive cycles for new PCM to learn about the engine and vehicle systems it is controlling
