White smoke issue and clanking transmission

White smoke issue and clanking transmission

I’m stuck on this issue I’m having my Ford ranger 2001 4.0l with a automatic transmission has white wet smoke coming out from the exhaust pipes I thought it was a blown head gasket or cracked head so I did an engine removal and replaced the heads and gaskets and Im 98% sure i did it right but when I reinstalled everything not only is my engine still blowing white smoke but my transmission is making a lot of clanking noises and can’t switch gears out of first I set the torque converter and installed the flex plate the only thing i can think of is the gear that you set the torque converter into when I was installing a new seal that rod was easy to move inward and outward of inside the bell housing but I have no real idea if that’s how it works or not and the white smoke problem I’m out of ideas on what I could fix on it please help Don’t want to have to sell it for way less than the amount I paid for it

Probably a little late but which cylinder "looked like" it was burning coolant?
Spark plug tip would be "steam cleaned" and cylinders piston top would be clean and some rust signs

And could be a cracked block...............................but there would FOR SURE be coolant in the oil pan if that happens

Were the heads pressure tested?

Rangers used the 4.0l SOHC engines from 2001-2011
The 4.0l SOHC never had issues with blown head gaskets or cracked heads like the 4.0l OHV did(1990-2000), so very odd to have had the white "smoke" issue

There needs to be coolant passed from one head to the other and to heat up the intake, maybe coolant passage in intake is cracked so coolant is being sucked in thru intake valves


If you mean the input shaft in the transmission, yes that shaft should move in and out while torque converter is off, it can be pulled all the way out when disassenbling
Torque converter needs to be full seated inside the bell housing before mating trans to engine block
And trans should slide on to engine flush, you should NEVER have to use bolts to FORCE them together, if you did then something was broken inside transmission
