1998 Driver's Seat

I never thought I'd join a car forum (I'm a motorcyclist mostly) but here I am.

I have a 1998 Ranger that is the most basic of all Rangers. The problem is, while I was out of the country for four years, the people caretaking at my house let the chickens or rats or SOMETHING completely eat up the driver's seat. (I now sit in a big cavity every time I drive. ) Small town Roswell only has one auto upholsterer, and he won't answer his phone, so I'm thinking maybe I can get someone to replace the whole seat if I can find a used one. Does that sound logical? The problem is, this truck has two bucket seats, but the DRIVER'S side has a bulge where a cup holder/tray/??? would sit next to the passenger seat.

I can't find a picture of this seat on the Web (maybe I'm blind) and can't find any seat covers that would fit. (Thought I might just plug some towels in there.)

This is frustrating because I have a broken leg due to a motorcycle accident, so it's the ONLY vehicle I can drive. (My poor m/c babies are rotting unridden.) I'm going for my THIRD surgery in a month, and when I get home from rehab, don't want them to tell me I can't drive the truck because I can't sit in it correctly.

If you need a pic I can get one when I go out to feed the chickens, llamas and goats tonight, but my house is NOT ADA compliant, so I'm pretty much stuck indoors.

I've had a lot of success with m/c forums, so hopefully you guys and gals can help me here.

Karen

Your best bet is to find a seat from a 1998-2000 Ranger. I'm assuming your Ranger is a regular cab based off of your description, so you will need to find a seat from another regular cab because the tracks at the bottom of the seat that bolt to the floor are different between regular cab and extended cab Rangers.

The seat you are referring to is called a 60/40 seat. The driver's side seat is referred to as the 60, because there is technically 20% of a third seat attached to it, although it's only good for small kids.

Alternately, trucks with buckets are referred to as 40/20/40 because the driver and passenger bucket seats are the same size, and the 20 refers to a center console or a small center seat that is separate from the two bucket seats.

Those years will fit?

I continued doing a search after I posted, and found a pic of the 60-40 seat. Never heard that term before.

Regular cab, certainly. Only NEW four-wheeled vehicle I've ever bought in my life.

So I can look for salvage yards? Do they make 60-40 seat covers?

And thanks, I've learned something new.

Yes, see if you can find one in a salvage yard in your area. There are some companies who make professional seat covers, but most of the ones that are custom tailored to fit Ranger seats are pretty expensive ($150-$400 depending on style) so they're not a budget friendly option. They also require you to disassemble the seat to replace them. You can always just pick up a universal seat cover at your local auto parts store. They don't fit the best but they'll work as a cover. You can always get some foam sheets from craft stores and make up the seat bottom that way. It's really up to you.

Thanks for that.

This forum is already proving it's worth as I FINALLY found a thread on this same subject from 2012-2019 (which mentions a guy named Terry who makes covers) and one from 2011, and have found some of those covers that fit.

I would have to take the seat out to replace it as well, right? And I haven't found ANYTHING locally that even begins to fit. I'd be OK filling in the foam, just have to find a guy who knows how to take cars apart to take the seat out.

But I'm WAY ahead of where I was two hours ago.

This may help...
Google up Ford Ranger Seat Foam, and a number of web sites come up...
One of them is Tasca Ford, which still lists and carries 60/40 seat foam for 2006 thru 2011 Rangers. The "60" part is about $112....but I don't know if it would fit or could be altered to fit your 1998.
Don't know what the difference would be between the years, but it might help you.
Several sites also list new/old stock 60/40 OE seat covers.
Seat Covers Unlimited also list 60/40 made to fit seat covers in various materials....not generic, they state custom fit made to order.

Thanks! Google has been my friend today and so are you guys.

I THINK I've found a way to get the seat cover, now if I can get the foam, that will solve my problem.

Again, thanks to all if I ever need anything else for my 168,000+ Ranger (which still runs great), I'll check here first.
