Ignition / starter problems
Ignition / starter problems
Hi guys, noob here. I hope I got the right category, bear with me. I've surfed through here and found some good help, but the problem persists. Long story short, my starter stays engaged full time with 12 volts applied. Key can be off, and removed. New starter and ignition switch. Swapped relays, and checked the fuses. I'm out of ideas ! Help ! Thank you in advance !

What YEAR Ranger and what engine?
Starter motor has a relay/solenoid on it, the smaller round cylinder
There are 2 wires on the starter, a larger cable from battery positive, and a smaller wire from external starter relay
The smaller wire is what activates the starter motor, when it has 12volts the solenoid inside will pull back a cylinder pushing starter gear out to engage flywheel, and when cylinder is pulled back all the way it will close 2 contacts connecting battery positive cable with the starter motor and it spins
The smaller wire is connected to the "S" post on starter motor, it will actually have an "S" on it, it can ONLY be connected to that "S" post, no other
The smaller wire should only have 12volts when key is turned to START
If it has 12volts any other time then starter will activate
Starting in about 1995 Ford added a fuse to START circuit, and up to 2003 Fuse 24 in cab fuse box was that fuse
Fuse 24 should ONLY have 12volts when key is turned to START
Test with volt meter, if fuse 24 has 12volt then starter motor will activate, so if it has 12v all the time then starter will activate all the time, so short in fuse box or wiring
If fuse 24 ONLY has 12v with key turned to START, then problem is in engine bay, starter relay wiring
There are also neutral switches
So do you have a manual trans or automatic?
Either of these "could" short out and cause 12v at fuse 24, long shot but certainly possible

Thank you for the response, yes, I did leave out some pretty important info, didn't I ???? Year is 2000, V6, 3.0 liter, auto trans. Will recheck the cab fuse box and solenoid wire and see about the 12 volts being there.
