Light/white smoke w/ pungent burning smell coming from passenger side rear of engine
I have been searching and searching and can't find the exact answer I'm looking for, so I'll ask.
On my 2001 Ranger 4.0l 4x4 with 194xxx miles with a slightly rough idle, I am experiencing white/light smoke with a pungent smell similar to burning plastic, not a sweet smell at all so not coolant dispite the color of the smoke.
It comes up on the passenger side rear of engine in the area of, what I'm assuming to be, the filter dryer for the A/C. (Haven't dealt with A/C repairs yet so unfamiliar with all those parts) It only happens after cold start for first 10 to 15 minutes then goes away (after warming up possibly closing a gap)
I am having trouble pinpointing exactly where it's coming from because it's almost transparent smoke with a slight white to it and disappears when I get real close to it.
If anyone has dealt with this, knows what's up, etc any and all information would be appreciated, and if its even worth fixing or just driving it until it dies.
Extra information if it helps:
I drove it 225 miles today and drive it 150 miles back and forth to work once a week or 2 since it only gets 12mpg going 75-85mph the whole way.
It runs and drives fine for the most part other than the shakes it gets when going over 80mph where the dashboard sounds like a massage machine being held to a table with coins on it at 90mph when the governor kicks in, but that's a separate issue from this and most likely has to deal with suspension or the 4x4 system/axles.
*I had to replace the front catalytic converters about 500 miles ago, they were so clogged they melted and was causing a misfire in cylinder 5, from all the backpressure from the exhaust being unable to escape, and the transmission to not shift properly.*
The rear catalytic converters are probably also clogged up but not enough to cause issues, I think.
I bought this truck 3 months ago with 192xxx miles on it. 🤦♂️
If a thread already exists for this problem and I just couldn't find it,, post a link so I can delete this one.
Don't worry about the driving, if you drive the I95 corridor in Northern Virginia, you'd understand or think we're all psychopaths driving, we pay for it on our insurance, I get it, so less about slowing down, and hope you never run across a driver with a 'NOVA' sticker on their car, and more about the issue, just giving information that may help figure it out, assume it's been driving like that for 190xxx miles in the hands of other crazy people.
