Hello I come from Germany and drive a Ford Ranger Edge 3,0L V6 from 2001 from the USA and have a question. I would like to drive this car with Flex Fuel
Is it possible to install an PCM
from 1999 or 2000 with an engine code V in my Ranger with the engine code U? Are all the pins exactly the same?
Maybe you can help me.
thank you
Greeting Olds1
Yes, it is possible, but has to be 2001 or maybe 2002 PCM, for sure not 2000 or earlier
2001(and up) were different than earlier Ranger Flex Fuel, first year that didn't need the $650 Fuel type Sensor to run E85
So yes all the PCM wiring is the same, and all the other sensors, 2001 and up
So changing to a 2001 Flex Fuel PCM would be "plug and play"
BUT.........................
2001 does have PATS(passive anti-theft system), which is inside the PCM in 2001-2003
So once the new PCM is in place you will need to have your current PATS keys added to the new PCM's PATS memory
There will be a No Start until this happens
You can buy "new" PCMs that come with 2 Blank(uncut) PATS keys already programmed into memory, and then have them cut to match your doors and ignition
Or most mobile Locksmiths can come to you and then use a Laptop with Ford software to add your keys to the new PCM
2001 and up Flex Fuel and Gas Only ran the same injector size, earlier did not, Flex Fuel needed larger injectors
But in 2001 Ford changed the software so they could use the same injectors in both(slightly larger), basically just a wider range for lean/rich which allowed for gas only to E85 without a Fuel Type Sensor
Hello RonD,
thanks for the detailed info .
I already thought about that with the keys. Here in Germany it is a bit more complicated because there are only a few locksmiths who are familiar with American cars. Otherwise, that would be easier with the "new" PCM.
I need with a "new" PCM a VIN with V as engine code.

2000 is very different, for the PCM and flex fuel change, than 2001 so you need to be sure on the year
Also different type of PATS, used separate PATS module
2000 3.0l Flex Fuel PCM needed the Fuel Type sensor to run E85, and the 3 wires for it, these sensors are very expensive, if even available
Also needed larger injectors
08/24/00 build date is most likely a 2001 model, model years change in 07(July) so May 2000 would be a 2000 model, (08)August 2000 should be 2001 model
1FTYR14U61PA17... so that would be one of 2001
I thought because the sticker on the valve cover says 06/24/00 that the engine is from 2000.
If that is not so then it is good.
The engines are assembled at different plants so can be as much as 2 years older than vehicle Model Year, but any changes are done to match model year before they are installed, in this case it will have 2001 size 3.0l injectors
Hello all,
today I wanted to exchange my "new" used PCM which was technically very fast. But unfortunately the keys can not be entered into the PATS.
I use Forscan with licenses but only one key is accepted but it remains locked when I turn it around nothing happens the starter does not turn.
can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong or what does not work.
The "new" one is a PCM from a 2002 Ranger with Flex Fuel engine which is what I wanted. It should be the last update from this series on it.
The PATS keys need to have 2 different numbers to allow programming, so NO CLONES
If only one key was accepted it still will not work without a 2nd key added
Forscan(most programmers) ERASE ALL previous keys when you go to Program Key Mode
You can go to a Locksmith and they can READ your 2 keys to see if they have different numbers, if they are the same number then buy a new PATS key and have them cut it to match the locks, then add the 2 keys and save the CLONE as a spare it will still work to open doors and start engine
Hello, it's me again,
I would like to tackle the problem with the PCM change again. Who makes the best new PCM's? Either reprogrammed or completely new, do you have any experience?
Greetings Olds1.
