tailgate latch and lock system

I'm looking for recommendations on a lock for the tailgate as I have a canopy and need to keep my tools secure. Can anyone recommend anything? I've got the factory plastic latch handle with no lock etc... I've read that the pop and lock system is kind of garbage. Upgrade to a metal handle, then use the pop and lock system? What have you all done?

Yes, never been impressed by tailgate handle locks

Canopy's rear hatch usually comes down an inch or so below top of tailgate so if canopy hatch is locked then tailgate can't be opened

If your hatch doesn't come down far enough then pop rivet a strip(or 2 tabs) on the bottom of the hatch, but offset it enough so it doesn't touch the paint on tailgate or you will get rub marks

You could add "tie-downs" to bed and tailgate so not ugly looking, lol, then use a lock, similar to this: https://i.pinimg.com/736x/72/93/6a/7...37594d451d.jpg

Yeah, my canopy's back window has a little lip on it to cover my tailgate, so you cant open it when the canopy is locked. But if you try to open the tailgate, it gives a little, and I feel like with enough pulling, you could bust it to get it open, but does stop anyone looking for an easy score.

Are the pop and locks really that bad? That's what I was planning on picking up for extra security. Especially since I plan on sleeping in it.

Thanks for the replies. My canopy wont cut it unfortunately, although riveting a few strips onto it would keep honest people out. I've read that the pop and locks suck, so I'll probably just end up jimmy-rigging something into the inside the bed and locking it from the inside before I close and lock the canopy. It's bizarre how there isn't more systems; I thought there'd be like 10 different products on the market for it.

Isn't it necessary to have power locks in the truck for that system to work? I just have manual locks unfortunately
