I have recently acquired my first Ranger, a 2006 XLT , 4 x 2, 3.0 L , Super Cab , so this is all new to me.

when I leave the driver’s door open, the dome does come on, but it shuts off by itself , after some time passes.

Is this what these rigs do ?

Yes. It's a battery-saver feature so you don't end up with a dead battery.

But should stay on 20-30min with either door open and key off
That's when SJB will turn off interior lights that may have been left on by mistake, just need to close the door and reopen it to get another 20-30min as far as I know

 

Or unlocking the door with the fob will turn the light back on and restart the timer if the light has been turned off.
