2003 Ranger Intermittent Starting Problem
2003 Ranger Intermittent Starting Problem
Hi there, new-ish member, long time lurker.
2003 Ford Ranger / Single cab / Manual transmission / 4 cylinder. 2.3L (THE MOST BASIC SETUP)
My Ranger has a problem starting. "Sometimes" it starts just fine, sometimes it will not even crank / turnover as if I have no power to the starter. I have already replaced the starter, but no luck. Have noticed when it DOES start, that I do not have to have clutch pressed, so I'm guessing no clutch switch to be the culprit. I have also tested the relay. No problem with that.
When the problem occurs, I noticed that if I turn the key off and on it will eventually start. It seems to be electrical but I don't know where else to start looking. Also...the keyring portion of my key has snapped off, so there's that as well. Don't have a spare. Possible chip or programming issue?? Battery is new and terminals are clean.
Has anyone had a similar issue. Please help. Sorry if this has been addressed already, I did not find it in any of the posts.

Yes, replace clutch switch, if its not closing with pedal down then its broken, i.e. it closed with pedal up which should NEVER happen
Its not hard to do just awkward, lol, Google: Ford ranger change clutch switch
When you turn on the key the THEFT light on the dash should come on and then go off
If it starts to Flash rapidly then yes, you most likely have a PATS key problem which is causing the no crank
You need a Spare key in any case, most locksmiths can CLONE your current working key, least expensive option, or bring a laptop out to the Ranger and add more keys
Get your 2003 owners manual here: https://www.ranger-forums.com/genera...1-models-3747/
Shows you what dash lights are for what
When you turn the key to START most lights on the dash should go off, this gives all electrical power to starter motor, if that doesn't happen then could be failing ignition switch, its under the steering column above brake pedal
