1986 2.9 myster black box behind dash

THANKS in advance for helping my dumb ***...

Have a 1986 2.9 2wd Ranger... having a mystery rough running issue. Replaced ignition module, timed it to specs, wires good and fuel pressure all checks out. This came on slowly and I'm wondering if that box (what the hell is it) might have something to do with the problem. Oh, also replaced my computer (ecm passenger side).

I'd really appreciate any help with this. Thanks much!

Tony

What do you mean by behind the dash, between the dash and the firewall? Is this actually in the engine compartment, mounted to the firewall and has an electrical plug and one vacuum line going to it (the MAP sensor)? Have you checked for OBD codes?

Thanks for asking. This "black box" is on the interior firewall, just to the right of the pedal assembly as one sits in the trick. I'm not under the truck at the moment, but I believe it's about 3x3 inches or so. Yup, have put the KOEO and KOER on it. So here are a few more details. I'v done the whole fuel system check and I have pressure in the thirties--too much to mention, but the whole fuel system has been gone through a few months ago. I was running well, just this occasional "kick" or hiccup.

On this cycle of fix-it, I had an extra distributor to swap out, and a new ICM. I've also got an extra computer that I've swapped out. Hell, I even swapped out the coil since it was an easy 4-screw job. Nope. Regarding the coes. KOEO reveals a 67 (AC switch code--I have the compressor off), then a 10 and 11. No big deal, right. But when I go to KOER, I get one click of a relay in the engine compartment, no black square and no signal of "6" cylinders. I get 000 and those three zeroes just sit there. Researching, I read that sometimes the computer control realy can be an issue. Now, I see there is some kind of relay above the computer. That may be today's adventure. But on trying to figure out that "black box" I don't want to ignore it as a potential. I will do some relay checks today. The three zeroes on the code reader during KOER seem weird to me. Been a while since I ran that test, but I remember more relays being activated.

Thanks for reading. Wishing all the dads a great Father's Day.
