My very tired 97 4.0 with over 225K miles has been smoking like a chimney on fire of late; eating coolant: trying to decide whether to go for a remanufactured or rebuilt the one I have: know if it gets rebuilt will definitely need new heads anyway: want to get it nice for the great grandson it will go to eventually, as I’m almost 85.
If a rebuild I have a shop where I can do it: realizing there’s a lot I just can’t do any longer; fortunately the shop owner is a very helpful younger guy!!
Thots suggestions appreciated!!

If a set of heads is all you need then rebuilding would be the way to go, new heads, roughly 800 bucks but I highly doubt that's the only issue. You can find reman engines with warranties for 2500 or so. Just do the math, if you are going to have 2 grand or more in a rebuild then a reman would be the way to go. Just my 2 cents tho. Good luck
