The manual says Mercon 5 but the guys at AutoZone told me I could use Mercon 3. I trust you guys more then I trust Autozone.

 

I have never heard of mercon 3, just mercon v and mercon. If you have an auto tranny, use mercon v, if it's a manual, use mercon.

 

if the manual specifies mercon V, then dont EVER use anything less, like mercon III. the ratings are essentially heat ranges, using mercon III will burn up the fluid and cause transmission damage. If you cant find it there, you can get a good synthetic, like AMSOIL, or autozone should carry the Mobil 1 ATF which will work

No drain bolt. You have to remove the pan. The fill hole is at the top of the tranny, on the side I believe.

 

Dropping the pan will only drain a portion of the ~10 quarts in your Ranger automatic transmission. Dealers and other shops use a special device to flush all of the fluid. It is possible to do it at home but it is trickier than an engine oil change.

well i just did the pan and filter....drove it about 3 or 4 miles, it shifted alot smoother....maybe thats just in my head. i brought it back, let it idle for about 5 minutes and checked the level again....i think there's too much in it.....
im good for overfilling stuff.

 

ah, sh1tty deal. I did the same thing. Luckily my neighbor had an evacuator to suck it out of the tranny dipstick tube. lol

damnit.....i guess i could just break the bolts loose on the pan and let a little of it run out and then tighten her back up again. think that would work? ...........maybe a loooooooooooong turkey baster? lol

lol find an evacuator or you're gonna have to repeat the entire process minus a filter

maybe someone here got inventive in this situation, give it time. i'm sure there'll be more replies by evening time when everyone gets off work.

 

well there's about 3 1/2 quarts in there now. i was able to get alot of it out.

 

I did the same thing a couple of years ago and bought a hand pump to get some of the fluid out via the fill tube. This is the pump I have and it works pretty well.

Most auto parts stores should carry something similar. You may have to work the hose to get it far enough into the fluid. I had to attach the small line to the end of it.

 

thats pretty much what i ended up getting and it worked fine. the only real issue i was having was getting a good reading on the dipstick since its so long. by the time you pulled itout, it had fluid in different spots from rubbing the sides on its way out. I think im good though...i took it for a drive, came back...let it idle for acouple minutes.....added a little fluid since i know pulled too much out on purpose. its not about a quarter of the way up the hash marks.

 

dammit...I just read this. I was starting to look into changing my transmission fluid..no drain??? fack

How well did that pump method work? Is that the only other alternative, other than taking out the pan?

 

lol the pump was used b/c of over filling, i wouldn't recommend you changing your tranny fluid in this manner. if you want a complete job, you're gonna have to get a new filter/gasket kit, 11 or 12 qts of merconV and something to catch the old stuff in. He just drained the pain which is, like he said, around 3 1/2 qts instead of the full ~10qts.

you're gonna have to take off the pan, reguardless, to change the filter.

 

I did a bit more reading recently, sounds like a job the shop can do.

When i had my trans "flushed" the did not change the filter.

 

^^^Sounds like a "quiklube" kinda joint that did it. I wouldn't put fresh fluid in with a dirty filter.

Would you change your oil and not the oil filter? not me...

just a quick word for you auto tranny guys out there...if you ever overfill it then it isn't a big deal at all....the tranny will only use the oil it pulls from the pan, therefore seals and gasktes won't blow out, the a4ld's have a tube on the top of it (all auto tranny's should) and when it is running, any excess fluid that is in the tranny will get blown out the hole...

kinda almost reminds me of a whale blowing out water :) lol...I got this all from a reputable tranny repair guy here in my town. He knows his shtuff, so I trust him in what he says...he did my explorer and rebuilt the m5od in my ranger and no problems at all...he is good :)
