Rangers Vs Other Trucks.

Do you ever feel these trucks get somewhat jipped when it comes to power?

Our truck stock puts out 207Hp, if you look at other brands they seem to put out quite a bit more.

Ranger 207hp 4.0L
Frontier 261hp 4.0L
Tachoma 236hp 4.0L
Dakota 260HP 4.7L (v8) 210HP 3.7L (V6)
Raider 230HP 4.7L and a 210HP 3.7L
Colorado 242HP 3.7L

Average hp for this class with a V6 (or I5) is about 228HP. Now Im not saying our trucks cant run with the best of them as I know the Frontier is quite a heavy truck compared to a Ranger, but I personally would like to see Ford step it up with perhaps a 250+HP model, I highly doubt this however because ford is killing off the ranger (or so its said).

What do you guys think? I mean a 261hp Frontier sounds like a beast to me.

I think my truck goes as fast as I feel comfortable going in a truck of it's stature.

True. If I wanted to go fast I'd have bought a Mustang or Firebird. The SOHC makes great torque in a very usable range. I think it's a good engine for such a light-duty pickup.

All those other trucks you mentioned are much larger, bordering on full-size rather than compact, where the Ranger is. That's the primary reason IMO. I never feel like my truck is starved for power.

i dont feel short handed at all. I like the ranger for its size/power. if i was going to buy one of those other models why not just get a full size?

The Tacoma Gets one mile per gallon better in a TRD Sport compared to a FX4 Level II. Trust me as a former Level II owner it will whoop the ranger in everything you throw at it. It does come at a price though the best price I could get was 24K I can get an F150 for that.

Eh, I have fast cars, I don't to much worry about how fast the truck is. It pulls the 16ft trailer full of crap I have behind it now and then with ease, takes me to my deer stand, and it looks decent. I don't need anything else from a small truck.

i think it is funny that a 4.0v6 tachoma is making more horsepower than a 4.7v8 dakota.....kinda funny to me.....

ford does need to rethink the engine options that are in the American Ranger........they need to redesign the 4.0 and also offer a diesel(we wont get into that since it has been talked about many times before) they shouldn't offer a v8....yea they have one in a Dakota, but have you been in a Dakota? they are as big as a full-size truck....they are huge and shouldn't even be in the same truck class as the ranger.....no other compact truck the same size as the Ranger has a v8 in it......yea i bet if Ford offered it, it would be a big seller, but it would also eat tires, suck gas, and cost people a lot of money to maintain....not to mention that it would prolly cost $30,000 to buy, and be 2wd....

i think its funny that i have beat a Tacoma X-Runner with my truck. That was with stock tires though. Now i have 31's
Also its funny that i get better mileage and make more power than my friends 2004 Tacoma. I bought the Ranger over the Tacoma and Frontier cuz it made more power than the Tacoma and the same as the Frontier but without the blower. I didnt even consider the S-10 cuz i have had problems with my old Blazer and i know people that hate their S-10's.

yea its kinda sad, and those are the low end v6's compared to the chitty 3.0.... the TRD tacoma my freind has is actually pretty darn fast, and i know people say id by a car if i want speed, but then why do we all get mods that will increase our power... id rather have the tacoma because it gives me speed and a bed....basicly its a v6 mustang with a bed...

Its really hard for me to say what kind of gas mileage I get in my Colorado. I dont do much Highway driving. I work 2 minutes from work and thats about as much as I drive. Anyways, I am thinking/guessing I get about 16-18 in my truck the way I drive it now.

I will be going to my uncles soon, so if I remember to check the guage and remember to post here, I will get back to you guys.

i remeber reading a comparo between trucks in motortrend, i think it was the colorado, canyon, frontier, tacoma, and dakota, no ranger though. i dont see why they didnt switch a ranger in there with the canyon or 'rado but whatever.

anyways, the tacoma won i think, its a supposed to be a great quality truck but its a little pricey. i have two friends with almost identical colorados and i havent raced them but i think i can spank them, and i mean they are set up nearly identical engine and suspension wise to mine.

the frontier does make good power buts its expensive and heavy, plus you cant mod one one those like a ranger, i mean we have so many more parts available. they said the dakota was draggin assss with the v8 and it had no life to it. i can confirm this from a friend who took his truck to the dealer for service and was issued a v8 dakota for a loaner, and he said it was a POS, no power for being a 4.7L v8

in conclusion i think our trucks are a great bang for the buck, easily modified, and they dont need all the fancy stuff that jacks up the pricelike on the tacoma and frontier. i had to pick though, other than the ranger i would take a tacoma becuase of the good stuff i hear, rangers still look better though

i have a '98 4.0 L ranger and a '95 3.4L tacoma. the tacoma is definitely peppier and shifts much faster, (they are both 5-speeds) so it naturally accelerates faster. i think that the ranger can beat it in top speed easily though. the ranger definitely beats it with torque though.

I'd rather give up HP to gain gas mileage......not like it would be a major difference though.

i remember stone saying that they *might* think about putting the 3.0 DOHC in the new rangers with 220 hp which would be sweet...
