well being what are you using that axle for daily driving and not owning a 4.0L a 7.5 will do the job owning a 4.0L you better have a 8.8 or if you have over 33" tires 7.5 hates that... if you want to install a 5.0L go get an 8.8... its not really if you like them or not. if you drove say zachs truck and then my truck you wouldnt notice a difference in the rear ends...

If a 3.0 and 33s can grenade a 7.5 (I've seen it happen) then I think a 4.0 with 31s could probably do it too.

Regardless, I've got a 31 spline 8.8 with the Torsen and I love it!

Stock was an 8.8 28 spline unit but I upgraded to a 2002 FX4 8.8 31 spline axle for the extra strength with my 35's and 4.56 gears.

What would the spline be on a 93 Ranger? 2wd

I have a 7.5 w/4.10s and 31" tires and i havent done a thing to the axle itself, even though I did blow apart my lock-right in it once... thankfully i just pulled out the left over pieces and installed the original spider gears and drove home no problem and now I have a new lock-right back in there.

7.5 T-lok w/ 4.10s.. i like it.. plenty of gear for towing and havent had any trouble.. when i get my 33's on it.. i'll basically de-gear it somewhat... but still have more gear then your standard truck.. get better mileage to.. 3k rpms on the interstate >.<
