odometer cable

Odometer cable, where exactly is it? I think mine has snapped or disconnected and the odometer is frozen. Can a new one be purchased at an parts store? thanx

Your 96 does not have a cable. The speedometer and odometer are driven by an electric motor in the cluster.

Did 1996 Rangers have a Vehicle Speed Sensor on the top of the rear differential?

No, it is on the transmission from 95~97.

If the speedometer works but the odo doesn't, then it has nothing to do with the VSS. It's not clear from the OP whether he just has an inop odo or if the speedometer is dead too. Both are driven by the same motor but sometimes the mechanical connection between the two frags and leaves the speedometer operating and the odo stuck.

So you think it's the mechanical connection between the speedo/odo motor and the actual gauges? That sounds like some small pieces behind the gauge faces!

Then the problem is definitely within the cluster itself. From what I've heard, the parts you need to repair the odo are not available separately from Ford, so you would need to buy a complete new speedometer assembly (assuming that a 96 speedo is still available form Ford).

As an alternative, you should be able to find a used instrument cluster for less than the cost of a new speedometer. Most junkyards like to sell the complete assembly as opposed to individual gauges or other internal parts.
