(I WILL DO MY BEST TO NOT OFFEND SOMEBODIES "FEELINGS" CONCERNING MY NEW POST!! THANKS AND NOW THAT I HAVE VIDEO TO EXPLAIN MY ISSUE I HOPE I CAN GET THIS RESOLVED WITH THE HELP OF MY FELLOW RANGER NUT CASES ;=) THE FOLLOWING ORIGINAL THREAD STILL APPLIES ,THANKS A BAZILLIONX, GAZILLION )All of the NOISE stopped when I stopped and put in in reverse and backed up about 20 feet!!!!










When I am out at my property in the country (about 6 miles off pavement )doing some light 4x4 stuff/work or even fishing at a pond in a field, when I am done and start heading back to pavement, just as soon as i get ON pavement and get up to about 15-20 miles an hour all of a sudden I hear a SPINNING/TURNING/GRINDING sound and have to literally stop and put it in reverse to get it to quit.

Keep in mind I put it back in 2 wheel drive several miles before I get back to pavement and at times are driving 45 miles per hour with no noise, also once I am on pavement and have to back up to get noise stopped then drive at least 55 miles per hour several miles back to town it will act up again USUALLY when I make a left turn going about 15 miles per hour.

I can't be stopping in the middle of traffic ( to back up) when I hear this gawd awfull noise every time.

Also sometimes I can spend the whole day in the city which is about 15 miles away and 70 miles an hour to get there and all of a sudden at those low speeds it will do that sh*T again.

I hope this description is detailed enough for you people who really know your stuff and can HOPEFULLY tell me what it is and not the million things it could be, lol

Sounds like left front OR front in general OR just under my rump,I had it in 4 wheel drive just a little while ago to go cat fishing down at the rivers edge and when I got home and turned in my drive it started spinning and grinding and had to put it in reverse to get it to quit. keep in mind I drove about 4 miles at 55-60 mph with no problems on pavement and this time it started when I slowed down to pull in drive

This has nothing to do with my tranny and it's an auto 4 speed with over drive.I have shift on the fly four wheel drive and whenever I take it out of 4x4 high and put it back in 2 wheel drive it's happening. Thanks

well if you keep shooting down everyones ideas .. how the hell is anyone supposed to help you ? if I had to guess I'd vote for a tranny issue also.

my vote is either your tranny or t-case.....but if it is happening while turning also, it might be time to check your front bearings.....I had a similar issue with mine. I drove approx 3500-4000 miles after buying my truck (used with 62,000 miles already on it) and I was in the mud quite abit when I first bought mine. Had a similar sound/issue, checked my bearing in my front end and they were DONE!!!! changed them and havent had an issue since.

I always stop and back my 2001 up when I shift from 4X4 to two wheel drive. I know it's not supposed to be necessary but i do it for my own piece of mind.

Yeah i have had the same issues with my 04 only when it is cold outside and i am using the 4x4 on the fly. I know sounds it makes so i just back up a few feet just to make sure the 4x4 is fully disengaged. I had to do this on my old 97 with auto hubs so i just got into the habit of backing up when disengaging the 4x4. If you still keep hear those noises then take it in to a ford dealer and have them check it out. Could be your motor on the tcase not fully disengaging the 4x4.

I guess I should have mentioned that I have been babying this issue for some time now and I had my wheel bearings inner and outer on both sides replaced about 4 months ago also I just had my tranny completely rebuilt about 30 days ago.

From what I am hearing today after havening somebody else drive it while I stood by it sounds like a front left axle spinning /or not disengaging properly after taking it out of 4 wheel drive,if the auto hub was busted it would not climb the creek banks i go threw so unless only part of the auto hub is bad then it really sounds like something is not DISENGAGING properly,but I am no expert ,we can't all be experts in everything in life and I would have never even sugested a tranny just out of common sense and my detailed discreption

I don't think I was shooting anybody down I just didn't understand how somebody with any common sense could think it was a tranny!!

Thanks for your input and I understand your piece of mind at least yours is working correctly and not making a ton of noise.

Thanks ,very logical practical answer,I was hoping somebody had the same issue and new what the hell was wrong with it I am willing to bet it might be the SHIFT MOTOR?.I have had several people suggest this.

its your transfer case its either not disengaging or trying to engage

ok well first off you don't have to be a *** some of the people who get on this site and ask dumb questions.. and have no clue what they are talking about and i had have a similar probably with a sound coming from my rear end after getting the rear axle wet or muddy its the bearings they just need to dry out it makes a poping sounded or a griding sound but yes i was serious and you don't have to be a asshat about my input ..
