Ranger 4.0 vs Dakota 318 V8
4.0 keeps up with 5.3 chevy single cab from a 45 roll its dead even til about 65-70 and then the chevy starts pullin haha.
the 318 is the 5.2 correct? id say it could be a close race til higher speeds when teh 4.0 starts to top out

Last time I checked the ranger wasn't a performance truck at all. Use this rule.
V8 in a mini = pwnage
V6 in a mini = win, unless new toyota
v8 fulsized truck = idk i've seen losses and wins
Srt 10 = crack is bad

A few years in a row we Michigan Lightning Owners club had track days where we shared the day/event with the Dakota club.
The V8 versions in mostly stock trim run mid to low 15s. The bolt on guys could click off mid to high 14s.
So even my fairly well "bolt on" modified ranger would have a tough time out running a 2wd V8 version.
I **think** the V6 Dakotas ran high 15s if memory servs me right?

I raced a 99 single cab 3.9 5 speed dakota with dual exhaust when I had 31x10.50s and walked him like a dog from a dig.
My '03 Suzuki Z400 (quad) destroyed the same dakota from a dig but I got caught up with and passed when he got up to approximately 90mph.

What about the 4.7 vs. the 4.0 modular?
My neighbor has a 98 Dakota, 4x4, 4.7 - he bought it used with no cats & a si/so flowmaster muffler, man does it sound nice. I'm pretty sure thats the only performance mod he has...
I wonder how good of a race it would be..

.On topic though.. I never had any problems with many Dodge trucks. There was a yellow one with a bumble-bee in a black stripe around the back of it.. Didn't even need 3rd gear before he gave up. I'm not carrying any weight though ( no power options, 2wd.. ) as others are.
If I only had a regular cab..
I was just asking cause I was reading a dakota forum or something where they said the ranger was quicker even with a trailer but I guess they were talking about the v6. atleast we're better at the off roading : ) http://www.offroadrangers.com/forum/...ad.php?t=21125
