high pitch whine
high pitch whine
anyone have any suggestions what would cause a high pitched whine in a 2000 ranger 4x4 4.0 5 speed? thought maybe release bearing but pushing in clutch does nothing... doesn't do it all the time comes and goes...seems to be more frequent when the mercury drops but still even if the truck is warmed ( driving on the highway) the noise doesn't go away.... any help would be appreciated, thanks

mine is doing that to but i have a 2001 4.0l 4x4 auto but it only does it when driving over 40mph could it be the pulley tensioner? any one else wanna help because this noise is driving me crazy
same here, after i get my brakes done ( midas quoted me 1200 to fix them WTF! needless to say doing them myself) this whine is next on the repair list... the tax rebate check we are all expecting is almost definitely going into the ranger! will have to take a look at my tensioner.when midas looked at my truck they noticed my power steering fluid was very dirty could that in some way be related? only other thing i can think of it seems to be coming from my front axles ( left?) hard to say because doesn't do it all the time and when it does for only a few seconds

this problem only pertain to the 4x4s? seems doesn't matter if u have standard or automatic ( guess rules out the clutch release bearing?) ohv or sohc... seems either a bad belt tensioner or something in the 4x4? noise seems to be coming from the front of the truck on mine....

apparently a lot of people are having the same issue. I am too. Looks like it does not care about the year of the truck either as mine is a 96. Everytime I hear it, I get out, pop the hood and it is gone. Its making me mad!!!
if someone does figure out what it is this should be stickied or something as this seems to be a common problem regardless of year or trans. anyone with a 3.0 have this problem? fiancees taurus doesn't do this so maybe only occurs in the 4.0 whether ohv or sohc? tensioner easy to inspect and tell if defective? or only can tell if replaced with another to try? ( if its the tensioner)

Yours is probably the Pinion Bearings in the rear end, Mine does it only when I'm on the accelerator and thats what my mechanic told me it was.
No, Ive sold so many of those synchronizers I cant keep em on the shelf. Most ppl think it has somethin to do with the belt/pully system, but from my experience with all the shops around here, on 3.0 and 4.0 OHV and SOHC engines, 9 times outta 10 its the camshaft synchronizer, located in the rear passenger side of the engine.

Camshaft synchronizers, well the easiest way I can explain it is that its like a distrubitor, it tells the pcm what position the camshaft is thus telling the coil pack to send fire to the right cylinder at any given time.
