That's vinyl. and it's plastic welded to the door panel.

I'd take it off though never attempted it myself. Use vinyl interior spray paint. prep! prep! prep! is key!

i would clean it up real good with some alcohol or something similar, spray it with an adhesive promotor and use sem color coat paint, it can be used on any kind of serface, you can get it in an aerosol can or shoot it through a paint gun, if you shoot it through a gun i would add more flexing agent so it will hold up better with out cracking. you can get all this stuff at your local automotive paint dealer, ask them they might recommend something better

All you have to do is when you take off the whole door panel, turn it around. Youll see some melted white studs sticking through. Take a small pair of side cuts and cut the melted part off and eventually youll get the panel off. I cleaned it up really good and sprayed it with Duplicolor vinyl and fabric paint.

Oh, and to get the panel back on I used some small screws and like 1 inch wide washers and screwed into where the studs were sticking through for a nice solid mount.

Eventually you lose that nervousness, atleast I sure did, but usually when i'm modding its not painting, its more like, hmmm that motor needs to be out of there...
