Icon5 Scan Gauge or X Cal - Next Mod?

I have heard such good things from both, but with fuel economy being important it seems like the Scan Gauge would be the thing to get. So what would you get?

Not really impressed with my bang for buck on my xcal. Yea its a little better all around, shifts are a little firmer..maybe a mpg or two at speed. Just my 2cents, basically stock 3.0. If i had a chance to try it out or something first, i would have put $380 in my truck elsewhere, like some spindles. Just my opinion though!

I do have a 4.0 and I have: headers, cat-back, cold air, udp's, plug wires, e-fan, and synthetic fluids. So it might benefit me, but I like the fact that I could fine tune my driving style to get better fuel economy. Also I wouldn't have to install after market gauges, as it is all in one.I usually drive about 5 mph over the speed limit, but I get there as fast as I can. I have a heavy lead foot. I don't know, I just need some opinions.

I think with all those other engine mods, you probably would be better off get the X-cal II.

So an X-cal is not worth it on a stock truck?

TUNER!!! The tuner will much better group those mods together...tweak the curves a bit better. Tuner is my vote.

EFF it.....whats another 140 for the scangauge? Get both!

I think i would have been happier spending the money on a rebuilt limited slip, underdrive pulley, flowmaster, and have some change. May be different on a 4.0. I expected more out of the shifting and a little more torque. My m/ts are pretty sticky tires, but in a coat of rain and with 4.10s i can't hardly spin the tires by loadin the brakes all the way up and holding it to the floor. Won't hardly powerbrake in the dirt either. Wasn't expecting miracles...but more than it gave. Probably helps more on a more modded engine i'd imagine.

Why don't you get the livewire 3? Isn't it a tuner and "gauge" in one??

It should be on some of the vendors website. If not I'll link it up.

I would love to get both but funds are limited. I thought livewire 3 wasn't compatible with rangers? I may just wait until I can by both. They would be a great combination and compliment each other.

I think the x-cal 3 is either out.. or will be avail before too long.

I'd suggest the scanguage. It'll not save you any fuel. But it will allow you to use it on other cars and *learn*. You can learn what mods have what effect, how to maximize your driving style, and you'll have more accurate fuel consumption recordings.

The x-cal w/a good tune will save fuel. But it's tied to your computer and really is best suited for folks who are into modding.

(I've got both btw)

Ive got both. Scangauge is sweet but really no added benefit besides monitoring sensors.

The xcal is a benefit IMO, it actually changes things on your truck

Scangauge does not change anything, you have to make the changes yourself in your driving habits to see better MPG

Looking back at this quote, admitting to having a lead foot and looking into a tool to watch for better mileage....doesn't that contradict itself? Are you actually going to drive 'better' according to the scangauge to get better mileage?

Well, I don't know if I'm different or not, I have both.

The x-cal was an AMAZING difference. Opened the truck up to a whole new world. Kevooo has it on his truck as well (as do many others), and I remember taking the first "test" drive with 35's and 4.10's on his 4.0, and my head going back into the seat hearing the tires chirp on the torque tune...it will not do that stock, or at least to that extent.

X-cal is without a doubt one of the best things to get better gas milage as well, as long as you whatch your foot (hence why everyone says a scangague). I am getting ~16 mixed. And I don't drive fast, but conservative. I get 14 w/o the tuner, I just took it back to stock tune for an entire tank, I track all my miles by GPS, not the odo, so it's accurate :)
