Ok so i will be participating in my first mud race on may 4th. Gonna run in street stock class. Don't worry is controlled and legal. Has anyone one here done it before? any tips? i plan to change all my fluids in the truck with Amsoil and new plugs and wire. Do you think it would be worth it to buy the screaming demon coil pack?

I also want to know should i run in 4 Hi or 4Lo? I thought i read that you shouldn't run in 4Lo over 30 mph or something like that.

 

You need high to get wheel speed. If auto put it in second maybe upshift if you are hitting limiter. If stick then try starting in second. You might burn the clutch a bit. Try a few different things. If you start in first all you are going to do is spin off the line. If you are auto and put it in 2 the tranny will start in 2nd gear.

 

Make skid plates if you dont already have some. Watch out for mud and water getting into your starter. Watch your brakes as well, as they will pack up with water and mud and may not let you stop when you want to. Decent wipers help. Last thing you want is to get mud splashed all over the window and not be able to see where you're going. So ont hat note, make sure you have washer fluid too.

You said no 4lo above 30 mph, is it going to be a drag style or a course track? Do you know if it is deep mud, or just a little mucky.
Reason I am asking, you might not get above 30. And I think that that rule applies to sustained speeds, where heat becomes a factor.
If it was my truck, there would be full syn fluid in the t-case and diffs. If your an auto, tranny flush, and if a manual, change the fluid. It might be over kill, but you are going to be beating on it pretty hard.
Your running those Maxxis 35.5's right? What gears are in your truck right now? If its a 4.10 or lower I would hit it in 4LO for sure.



Or use Dialectic Grease, a little cleaner.

 

I would not use low in mud. You will spin off the line like crazy and the tranny or you will have to shift really fast.

But you need wheel spin in mud to clean out the tires. If he is in 4lo, and starts off in second, he might get to 3rd or 4th depending on the track.

I have tried low in mud and it doesn't help. First just starts spinning the tires like nothing and the other gears don't give you enough speed. I have always found 4wd high 2nd gear will give enough wheel speed to keep the tires clean and to give you enough speed forward to get around without having to downshift or upshift unless you really need to go fast. But then again I have a manual.

Eh I think it depends on driving styles, and gears. Unfortunately for me I have 3.73s right now, so I usually need 4lo to get them spinning, I dont really like dumping my clutch when I am into some deep mud. Its a good way to shock your drive train, putting unneeded stress on it, so 4lo works for me. I was just thinking he is probably in the same situation as me if he is using those 35's.

 

Depending on his mileage I'd drop the pan. Flushing can make problems.

 

I agree with him if you are running stock gears and those 35's you will never get enough wheel speed to clean your tires out in high range.

Also for not going over 30 in low range, i did it many of times at the dunes when I had 35's and 4:10's and didn't do any damage to my truck.

 

Thanks for the input guys. It is a drag race style in only 6" deep mud and 150' long. I doubt my land speed will get very high but wheel speed i am sure be up around 30.

The tires i have are actually gateway buckshots....older tire but works awesome in mud. They are similar to TSL's. I have stock 4.10 with the 5R55E tranny. I did a tranny flush with Amsoil at 50k miles. right now i have 71Kmiles so think i will be ok to flush it out good.

The only thing i have against runnning in 4hi is it seems to have a rev limiter at 3000 rpm right? I talked to another guy got who me into mud draggin and he runs in 4Lo of course he has 394w Stroker with EB Dana 44/9" axles topped off with 38.5x11 boggers in his ranger. lol

My truck could do that.

Do they set the till depth to 6" then spray it with water hoses and have a lane for everyone because otherwise the people going last are at the greatest disadvantage.

The mudd races back home they would till an acre plot 1' deep just before a hard rain. The next day you have an acre of the sloppiest mud you've ever seen.

Don't the automatics have a limiter when in 4wd low? I can go redline 5th gear in low in my truck.

6" could be easy, or be some of the slickest **** ever.

 

i dont know how much you have wheeled your truck mine is a 4.0, auto, 4.10 gear, 4x4, and i have ran mine in three mud races and two mud bogs, putting a bunch of money into the truck for a race if its just a timed straight run your probably not going to get alot more speed than you would regular, i have no power adders and i run mine in 4lo and in drive with overdrive turned off, depends on how long the track is if the track is only 100ft i will run it in 1st gear and i redline at the end off the track, out of 41 trucks all makes street class i placed 3rd last Nov

 

by the way my wheel speed at the end of the track when i am in drive not 1st has gotten up to 65mph thats wheel speed not moving speed
