Hello to all,

This is my first post. I bought a 1994 Ranger new back in '94 and drove it for almost 14 years and 200k miles, then gave it to my father about 1 1/2 years ago. I had to upgrade to a 4 door with 2 small kids (a sport trac)...wish they sold the 4 door ranger here in the states that they sell in the UK and Central America!!!

Anyhow, the truck now has about 230k miles and my dad called me yesterday saying that it is acting up and he and my uncle can't figure out the problem...my uncle is a mechanic, but he can't figure this one out, yet.

Anyway, he said that it is missing out and that black smoke will come out of the tailpipe. Also, can't accelerate quickly, have to gradually give it gas. It will go, but gradually.

Anyway, does anyone have any suggestions.

Have they done a compression test? Sounds like maybe a valve is sticking. Exact same problem my truck has right now also. What engine?

 

The truck has the 4.0 V6...it's been a great engine!

 

plugs, wires, coil pack? when was the last time they where changed

 

I changed a lot of stuff about 4 years ago...did a tune-up on it. I appreciate the info, I am passing along the suggestions.
