FLOWMASTER 40
FLOWMASTER 40
So today in school my friend randomly gave me a muffler, flowmaster 40(for free). how do u think that would sound on my 2008 4.0. Im not that inteligent about trucks and all so im not too sure.
putting a flow master 40 on my truck was a waist but i have a 2.3l it sounds ok at certain rpms but most of the time it sounds like the stock muffler idk if its the fact all i could find was a 3 inch and had to reduce it back down to stock size should sound better on a 4.0 when i get some money ima redo my exhust again

YouTube - flowmaster 40 on 2.5" piping 2.5l lima 4cyl outside revving
if i were to do it again id get a glasspack straight thru though
i like it on mine

This is what happens when you have Flowmasters haha...I kid.

Me with bullet style/straight thru vs 78 Camaro mods with Flows...just rolling on the throttle.
Do whatever you want man, can't please everyone.

on rangers the difference for horsepower between a straight through and a chamber muffler is negligible. even when talking about 450 hp motors. its +- 10 hp, which you will never feel in the butt dyno. and when you get to that amount of horsepower its more or less 2.5" exhaust or 3" exhaust that makes up more power
on a ranger, get what sounds best to you.

dont really feel like arguing, but either way. on a ranger. just pick what muffler system/style which sounds the best for you.
this is on a pushrod 302 motor, and not a v6 ranger, but you can see what im talking about

Notice where Flowmaster falls on the list. We dynoed a GT similar
to mine with before and after pulls. Lost 1 whp going to Flowmaster from the STOCK muffler. Almost exact conditions on both sets of pulls. We have seen bigger differences in losses on LSx cars.
Your right though on a Ranger it doesn't matter. If you like the sound of em
go for it. I personally hate the sound, but that's just me.

Everyone knows you buy flowmasters for the sound, not the performance.
However ive never heard of a car losing HP going from stock to a flowmaster. But like the one guy said you will not notice the difference from a straight threw to a chamber style unless you have a high HP car.

I had a 40 series on my 3.0 and it sounded wonderful. I get a kick out of these younguns around here that think running straight pipes gives them power. lack of back pressure equals loss of power. I had a magnaflow on my 5.3 Envoy, sounded good, but then again it was a V8. 70 series is deep/throaty and sounds good.
I cut my exhaust right after the cat and have 2.5" ran from there into the original 40 series and then 2.5" coming out ran out to the stock location but at an angle just like the gibson extreme duals but with only one pipe if that makes sense with a 3.5" slash cut stainless tip. It looks great and sounds amazing I get compliments on it all the time. It sounds very deep and ya there might be a tiny bit of drone around 2500 rpms in first through third gear but in 4th and 5th going down the road I can barely even hear it. I noticed a little better throttle response but thats about it. The bottom line is it's a freaking ford ranger not a drag car so get what sounds best not what makes 1/2 a horse more. I tried the whole Magnaflow thing and about every other muffler there is out there and nobody sounds like the flowmaster original 40 series. I brought in a sheet I printed up showing that I could get the muffler for like $55 shipped on ebay and my local muffler shop matched that price so something else to think about.
For what its worth, i've got an Original 40 on my Bronco and love the sound. I went from an 18 inch glasspack, and it was a great improvement. Just about the same volume, but deeper and a bit less drone.
I've had a flowmaster 40 american thunder on a pervious vehicle......just loud and annoying at cruising speed. They are nice on older mucle cars to give them that traditional sound, but just annoying when driving.
I love Spintech because they keep a moderate tone, but sound stock overall......Numbers are still fairly good in the end. Their construction is definitely better and more rugged than Flowmaster. Flowmaster has very thin shells in comparison and their welds are thin as well. My old Spintech on my other vehicle was able to take a few dents and dings without cracking or splitting.....unlike my brother in law's flowmaster on his bronco. That thing pealed open like a sardine can when it hit a tree limb.

I just got a Thrush welded muffler (generic Flowmaster 40 series) I'm going to be putting on my Ranger here soon. I'm looking for a little more tone out of my truck. I know it won't make monster HP. It's just a daily driver. I have one on my 91 Chevy, and it sounds good...
