Glad everyone is ok!! yeah glad it wasnt the truck that coulda been REALLY bad for that civic!! usually when your car is in that state SOMETIMES the adjuster will ask you if you want them to total it out. Usually the insurance companies would rather do that, just depends on how new the car is....and it probably wouldnt hurt to ask if they'll just total it out.

Glad everyone is ok aside from the jangled nerves (others) got from it. It could have been a very bad day instead of a bummer.

As far as the car, i say its a borderline total. I dont know the rear suspension that well on these cars, from the pics it looks like youll need

rear bumper
rear impact bar
right tail lamp
i would bet a new quarter panel
i would bet a rear body panel
blend the decklid if its undamaged (cant tell in the pics)
blend RR door

Those repairs alone will be an easy 6K if it goes the way i think.

The suspension work depends. I dont know what kind of rear cradle that thing has. If its expensive, its gonna total. If its relatively cheap, itll still be borderline. 75% is the standard for a total loss. at $13,500 the rough threshold is $10,125. I would bet the damage will be in the $8,300- $9,000 range. I might be off a bit just because i cant see the damage that close, but still.

EDIT- CRAP!!!! I forgot! you said the airbags blew!!! Did all of them go off? I bet its a goner.

Get a Fusion Sport. They arent that much and they rock.

Glad to hear everyone is okay!!!

on another note... i couldnt see but did they have one of those "Baby on Board" stickers? because i know around where i live that is just an excuse for people to drive like they have their head up their a** LOL

and i know that the VW's can be fixed but it is pretty spendy.... my mom got into an accident in her 04 Passat and they fixed it but it was like a grand away from totaling it

True, and you can't even fart in one without setting off a check engine light.

lol at the CEL comment. This car has been awesome for us in the year we had it, only 50k miles on it.

It's an 03 GLI (VR6 six speed), black leather, power moonroof, heated seats/mirrors, lowering springs/struts, bigger sway bars, magnaflow catback. Very nice car to drive.
Anyway..

The rear is actually a 1-piece axle I think, and the axle itself is folded up, and I believe the mounts are bent/broken, not sure how the attachment points look.
The only airbags that deployed were the passenger side (overhead and out of the side of the seat). Still not cheap.

I've been looking at cars online but I don't want to get in the mindset of it too much in case they fix it. My wife likes the late model GTIs, I like the late model A3s (both would be a 2.0T), six speed or DSG auto, either way. A TDI Jetta would be nice too.
I only found one used Fusion Sport online in the "area". I'll have to drive one. I don't want to spend more than 20k on a car though. We owe just under 8 on the Jetta with $200/mo payments and I don't want to pay more than $300/mo on another car. Assuming we get the low end on the car, pay off the loan and have only 3k down, a 7% 72mo loan on $20k plus sales tax is around $300 for $20k, if I figured that right.

Well Shane we drove a Fusion SE 4cyl 6 speed manual today, lame! Super unimpressive power, and I didn't like the clutch feel or shifter much.
Then we found out the sales manager had a Fusion Sport with the 3.5L as a demo. MUCH better. Better looking, more comfortable, much better power. It is an auto, but it isn't that bad. The leather seats were fairly comfortable, roomy in the back seat, not bad overall. This one was red but I really like the blue. Retail was $27k. I just hate the idea of buying new though and losing value off the lot, we'll see. The first dealership had no new fusions or focuses, everything gone due to the clunkers.
We still are not 100% sure it will be totaled yet, but I'm trying to get some ideas of where to look and what to look at if they do. Depending on the settlement a new Fusion might be feasible, who knows right now.

There were only a few new Jettas at the dealer, and only with the 2.5L 5 cyl. No one would even come out and talk to us so we didn't even get in one. We went to an Audi dealer looking for late model A3s, GTIs and Jettas but all we found was an 06 GTI, 2.0T six-speed manual with 46k miles. Fairly basic with options, no leather, moonroof etc, hood wouldn't latch and appeared to be wrecked. Could not drive due to hood latch but it didn't appeal much, especially having been smoked in heavily. Another reminder of why I hate this place is that everyone smokes, I couldn't find a single F150 that had not been smoked in when I bought mine, and I looked at a LOT. They cleaned mine well but I still get a whiff of some on occasion.

Otherwise I spent the rest of the day calling different insurance companies, getting the wife a rental car, getting belongings out of the car, getting prescriptions and chasing down the police report. The deputy told us it would be available this morning but when I called, I was told that I could not get it until next week since the Sheriff is out of town until Saturday. What a joke this place is. Fortunately the guy who hit us was honest and told his insurance it was his fault so the claim is moving along.

People either love them or hate them generally. I use to hate the plaid, but now I think it is 'OK'. I still prefer all black leather though.

I'd love to buy it back and part it but I don't have anywhere to store it.
I'm sure I would have no problem selling the 51k mile VR6/6 speed, seats, catback, other airbags, and many other things that are in awesome shape.
But I need the money for a down payment. If they total it I will definitely ask about buying it back but I doubt I will do it. If I had extra money in the bank and a dedicated buyer for stuff I would love to.

Just priced out the lowering kit (shocks, springs, bumpstops and swaybars) at $925 online. The wheels aren't made any more, but the closest match (same brand and size) is $359 each on closeout through tirerack.com, not counting shipping.
$500 for the catback.
I'm not going to mention any of it until they come back with an offer. If they say it is totaled and make an offer, I will ask to get some of the value back for these things.
If it is going to be fixed, it needs to be done with the same or similar parts.

The Fusion Sport is nice. I've had a chance to look at a few. I'm glad to hear everyone is fine.

I think the GLI is leather only.
Personally I like the interior of our 03 better for some reason. I still haven't driven the new body style, but I have driven an 08 or so A3 which I think is the same platform...
I don't mind the Focus I guess, but I don't really like them that much. That's what we have for a rental right now.

I'll probably be looking around the next few days while my wife is working, assuming I can stand driving much. I can't be flying with hydrocodone so I don't see myself working for a few days still. Not so easy to climb up the side of the helicopter and check out blades, refuel on my own, etc. My personal injury from allstate only pays 85% of missed wages, and only 200 per week (wtf). That barely covers one day. I guess the rest will have to be part of the pain/suffering claim. Unfortunately that part needs to stay open for a while until pain and doctor visits are done with both of us and we are sure there is no longer term damage. Otherwise some of that could help us get into another car.

This whole thing pretty much sucks. My back is getting more sore and stiff, and my wife's neck is much worse this evening. She was having a hard time picking her head up from laying down on the couch and in bed. I think that not only the jolting, but also her side airbags may have knocked her head around a bit. We got everything else from the car today and I noticed that the entire passgenger side had an airbag from the windshield to the rear window that deployed, as well as the side of the seat. I didn't realize before that the side airbags went all the way back. Also the rear passenger door does not open but that is to be expected I guess, lol.

The other odd thing is that none of the airbags in the civic deployed, what a POS! They hit us at high speed, and rolled over and none of them went off. I didn't think about it until I remember being down by the ground helping the guy with his babies, and nothing was blocking the doors/windows. My wife said she looked at the steering wheel and it was intact like normal with no airbags. I guess the crash sensor must have been in the center of the bumper and they hit us with the front corner. Crazy.

Man, that's quite the accident. I'm glad to hear everybody's ok, hopefully no shaken baby syndrome comes from the Civic's barrel roll.

Yeah it definitely lessened the impact. It was still enough to push us 60-70 feet from a stop, but he didn't carry all of the momentum into us.
Had we been driving my truck his face would have been pretty close to my bumper I think.
