Beach pics (15)

Wow...fun to see pictures from someone local! I was looking at them without reading, scratching my head and saying "boy that looks like Packery channel...."
For better off roading where the sand is a lot looser, you can go to Padre Island National Seashore. It's a federally protected beach that's 60 miles long (heading toward South Padre)...loose sand most of the way beyond the 10 mile marker. You essentially head south on SPID (TX-358) and keep going until it becomes Park Road 22...it dead-ends into the National Park. It's open for camping and is a really cool, WAY REMOTE place, not accessible by any paved road. You can't drive on the dunes, but you can drive the entire length of the beach, which especially since Hurricane Ike, is just downright rowdy in a compact truck. At the very end, you have to turn around and go the entire way back on the beach...no road access...there's a channel that's not crossable by vehicle (you can do it in a kayak, though!). They not only allow 4x4's, beyond the first marker, 4 wheel drive is required.
I was down there a couple of weekends ago for Sharkathon and my buddy and I (he has a Ranger, I've got a B4000) were chilled out on lawn chairs watching people in these big trucks get stuck and beach themselves... It was so hilarious. It was like Super Duty after Super Duty just sinking. Rangers, Tacomas, Frontiers...those were about the only folks making it. It's a hell of a fun drive and some beautiful land.
It is a real national park so it costs money to get in. I have an annual pass that gets me in for all year for $20. They sell day passes for visitors or you can buy the $20 pass and just have it. I don't know what they cost. It's not too bad.
South Padre was wiped out by Hurricane Dolly and is in pretty sorry shape right now. They're rebuilding, but they took a ton of damage. Who knows how it will be by Spring Break time.
We're going out there tonight to pick up wood off the beach. I'll get some pictures.
