Some blow off valves are open during idle and unmetered air is probably being sucked in causing a crappy idle. The incoming air is metered the same way Rangers meter it. With a MAF.

Oh, I didn't even notice he didn't have the stock one on there. Yeah, I've heard of that before and that is IMO just another reason why atmospheric bovs are stupid.

They aren't stupid. Some flow better when they aren't recirculated. You just have to know what you are dealing with when you install one.

I think they are in 95% of applications. They make the car run rich inbetween shifts, and they sound stupid and annoying. I could see needing one on some high boost car to insure no compressor surge, but they are always like the first thing people do to stock turbo cars. Half of them are crappy and have leaking issues and stuff too.

All turbo cars will suffer from compressor surge without a BOV. The reason most of them sound stupid is because they have like whistles in them. A faster working BOV will help with keeping the turbo spooled between shifts. Most people only by them because they sound cool.

Neon SRT-4 owners buy a $60 bov spacer that dumps the air. That is stupid.

Which is why all turbo cars have a recirculating one from the factory. Just because you have an atmospheric one doesn't mean your not going to get surge. I still don't see the benefit to atmospheric, companies make recirculating ones that are just as good, and most bov's can be used in either way yet most people still go with the stupid atmospheric just because they want to hear their car sneezing? Those spacer things make me lol, morons.

But I'm saying that some aftermarket ones can react faster than factory ones. I personally like the sound if it has no whistle to it.

I'd rather have a Subie but nice car. I found out the other day when I was in Vermont that they build the Subie rally cars over there. Might just have to bring my 98 outback sport with 365k and do an STI swap :)

The stock blow off valve is a recirculating valve, it dumps back into the intake after the MAF. When you vent to atmosphere on the stock ecu it will screw up the mixture between shifts because air that has already been metered.

I don't see how that could be related to your idle problem because at idle, the valve is closed.

Changing to a VTA BOV is only a good idea if you are running an AEM, with the GM Map sensor or the JDM Map sensor. In this case it can be advantageous.

Don't forget the EPA says that anything that comes into your filter must be scavenged. This would make VTA illegal.

Its a HKS valve. Also some blow off valves are sometimes open at idle because of engine vacuum. Apex even includes a small filter for their BOV.

Watch as the valve closes when he opens the throttle and opens with engine vacuum.

See that just revving can cause surge.

You don't have to own an import to be a ricer.
