2.5l gas miles question

2.5l gas miles question
i have a 99 b2500 xcab with the 2.5l 4 banger. The truck has 91k on it
my question is this thing is epa rated to do 20 city, 27 highway.
this weekend i did a 630 mile round trip ride on flat interstate, with the back loaded up with a propane bbq grill that was slightly taller than the roof of the cab, a mountain bike, various other camping equip covered with a blanket ac on 2 notches, and 70 mph average speed.
my question is shouldnt i get better than 21 - 22 mpg?
my friend had a 96 xcab ranger with the 2.3l and no ac and fully loaded he got 26 mpg
just was wondering if this is reasonable or if i need a tune up ... this is my first long trip in this truck, and i plan to drive it to wisconsin in 2 weeks, so if i can get more mileage out of it i would like to. I am already planning on running some fuel injector cleaner thru it.

If you want to get better mileage, turn off the AC. I'm not a doctor, I don't know the % parasitic drag coefficient of the AC compressor, but I do know it sucks a lot, especially from a 4 cyl. I never use my AC, it's always windows down,,, but on the other hand, I have my windows down summer, winter, rain or shine.

1st i think that mileage was about normal for that load... but do pay attention to your tire pressures. you can go upto the max cold repeat cold pressure that should be labeled on the sidewall. of course running with no a/c and windows up on the highway will help. and slow down!!! 70mph will suck fuel..

Yeah, i get like 23 while mixed driving. However, I normally take 100mile trips, and i notice my gas mileage when i am driving fast. So slow down, i notice a difference between 60 and 70mph. Your stuff in the back plays a role along with the a/c.
I get like 28 nowadays when i drive conservatively on the highway.
I got a Scanguage, and am going on one of theose 100mile trips so i'll let you know how it goes mileage wise.
