97 Ranger XLT 2.3L Transmission sticking
So i was driving down the freeway and got in fourth gear, i noticed my gear going in can hard, ...didnt pay much attention to it, when i was wanting to shift into 5th it got stuck in fourth and i had a hard time pullin it out of 4th, then it did realease and i got it into 5th ...and for my luck it didnt come out of fifth...i had to leave it parked next to the free way cuz i didnt know wat was wrong... lol funny thing is i work on construction machinery, just got into the job. I got a general transmission book and start reading it all. Came home took the shift stick off, and i was lookin at the fork thru a small whole on top, grabbed a small pry bar and gently got it out of 5th gear. Installed everything back the way i took it off...and wiggled the shifter...So i took it out for a spin, and i have encountered hard shifftin into most of the gears, but it happens intermittently, as far as the reading i did on transmisions, i'm thinking my tranny has synchronizers for going into gears, but not sure. Would anybody know how to find out where i can locate the serial number of my tranny, and if any familiar ideas i can try out to trouble shoot my gears going in hard and sticking? Any help would help before i decide to drop the tranny and open it up ....

my clutch pedal should feel pressure like a 1/4 of the way pressed, and it feels like its gettin it 3/4 of the way pressed in...i can feel the the clutch disengage the flywheel, so i know it has enough to change gears, but now u makin me think the clutch disk is worn, causing it to drag as they would say and hard to catch on flywheel... wat do u think? i have had my truck for a year, and first it was the 1st and 2nd gear hard to get into...then a few months down the road i didnt notice hard entrance to 1st and 2nd...well my truck has been sittin here for a month or so cuz it makes me not want to drive across town to go to work just to think that it can get stuck again lol

thinking about it, i got this truck from an old man that lost his vision in one eye so he had it sittin for 2 years almost before he sold it. I'm beginning to think if this man ever changed out the clutch disk at all when he had it, how long does a clutch disk usually last on a truck usually use to commute back and forth to work, not a cross state traveling truck ????

when i drained it seemed kinda low, didnt seem like it was up to the fill point. i know it uses synthetic oil, but at the time i did the drain i filled it up 80w90 gear oil. after the drain and refill i stopped using it. didnt want to get it stuck again, i just took it for a spin, and that fourth gear gots a catch when i try to get out of it. my neighbor gave a clutch aligning tool to use, but i doubt its an aligning issue. wat do u think?

Gear oil probably has a lot to do w/ it. These take ATF. Your mistake is common enough though. Id say step one is figuring out a way to break down and drain out all the 90w. Im not sure what to use as a flush though... Maybe fill it w/ some sort of solvent (diesel comes to mind) and let it sit for awhile (DONT DRIVE IT!!!). Even if it works, it may not fix your sticking issue and your guaranteed to have to drain and refill the transmission w/ new atf a few times.
