crank issues
 

I was hoping someone could tell me the name of this part. I pulled it from my 94 Mazda and need to have it replaced as it's throwing off the timing. Attachment 101034Attachment 101035Attachment 101036

where is this part located and on what year and motor?

It fits around the crank pulley for the timing belt. It comes from a 1994 ford 2.3 L engine.

this is right out of the workshop manual do you see it in this pic?

its the ring for the crank sensor aka hall effect type sensor.

and your sure thats throwing off the timing and not the actual senor?

Fairly certain. The collars that pass through the sensor are bent.

interesting, goes to show you how many 2.3s i work on, i think every one i have worked on had a distributor lol

hopefully you can get one from a junk yard that isnt bent up.

actually the one in the picture is one we pulled from a junk yard. A lot of junk yards here don't even part out their vehicles. We had to go an hour away for this one. we got it thinking that the original in my truck was in worse condition. It wasn't.

So does this piece have a specific name?

its a reluctor ring, i ithink i spelled that right

Ok. Well considering only the short wall is bent on the reluctor ring, should it still function properly with the sensor? I'm only somewhat confidant that its the ring that's faulty.

that ring should be perfect, a little bend can throw it off. but i would put a sensor in to be on the safe side.

Well. Having watched me piddle around too long on this thing, my brother decided he'd get me a code reader. And all the while I was hoping for a 227 so I wouldn't feel retarded for spending so much time on it. But alas, I got myself a 224.

code reader should have been the first thing you did. its stupid with vehicles now to just start replacing parts unless you scan them cause you dont know what the actual issue is

Luckily we hadn't poured too much money into it before this point. Being a novice and learning as I go does have a great deal of disadvantages. But after using the code reader and examining the coils, we found the 1st and 4th exhaust stroke coils to be faulty. The only thing we lost here is a great deal of time. I'll be picking up and installing the ignition coil tomorrow. Pretty excited. And yes, I do feel quite stupid. But at least I know better for next time.

Wonderful. My brother told me this story of a guy who was changing his oil. He was having trouble with the plug so he unscrewed the oil filter and ran his vehicle till it stopped spewing.

lol isnt that how your supposed to drain the oil?
