dual distibutors?

Im doing my plugs and wires today and i was thinking why do 4 cylnder ranges run a dual distibutor setup. i have owned two 4 banger rangers and they were both like that. i was thinking it might help get a more compleat combustion, but then why dont other cars have that setup.

thanks, CH

for emissions reasons. The newer ones have single coils and ford uses a waste spark system

Waste spark is where they set up the ignition to go through one plug wire (to cylinder #1, for example) while it is in the compression/power stroke and it also sends spark down the opposite plug wire (to cylinder #2, for example) while that cylinder is on the exhaust stroke. In other words, the spark plugs fire in pairs.

Here's a good read about the system found on many Fords.
