Engine starts fine but when given rpm, stalls and loses compression FIXED
LONG POST If anyone seems to be having issues with there ranger that relate to a few of my earlier posts I have found a problem and a solution that I haven't found anywhere online or in person so I’ve decided to share for anyone else with the same problem. My 99 2.5 ranger has always been weird since I got it. when I’d start the truck and drive it would be fine but whenever you gave it anything over I’d say 3000-3500 rpm it would just barely fire on 2 cylinders after you let the rpm’s go down and try to stall, if you gave it any real juice it would just stall right out as soon as you pushed the clutch in, when I’d try to start it after it does stall, the engine just turns over like there was no compression, so I did a test with one plug in the cylinder with the comp gauge in the other plug hole, the truck would turn over fine with over 100psi in each cylinder so I ran it with the gauge still in the cylinder and made the engine stall by revving it up, I’d have around 20psi. After a long road of fixing many other problems with the truck I was left with this one issue so I always knew that 2.5s have common valve sinking problems but when I had my head off it was completely unnoticeable but apparently my seats were just sunk in enough for it to run but when you give it rpm, the HLAs pump up and hold open my valves. I wasn’t pulling the head off after I just did a head gasket. I whipped off the valve cover real quick and we have a rocker arm tool for the limas so I popped them off, and pulled the HLAs out and took off .020 from the bottom, so far I’ve just done the exhaust side because it was 9:30 and I had to drive the truck home so I threw it back together and after 20 mins of driving it’s the best I’ve ever felt the truck run since I got it, stalling problem completely gone, keep in mind when you first start the engine it is going to run absolutely terrible until the lifters get pumped up so give it some rpm to get oil pressure to the HLAs if you bleed them all the way down when they’re out like me again. I also plan to do the rest of the intake valves as well as .060 shims on the springs because I don’t feel comfortable with those springs past 5500
