Power steer pump or gearbox bad trying diagnose what I tried to fix
Got the truck with a leaking low pressure side hose on the PS pump But what I saw was a neglected half on half off half tightened hose clamp and pump which had been ran low for noone knows how long and neglected so I took a shot at new hose with clamps to fix it . Filled with ps pump with fluid and no power steering nothing changed not even noise . I got a new pump today but I have a inkling to suspect otherwise because the pump in the truck makes 0 noise no winding nothing and still hard steering which if it were bad wouldn't it make noise of some kind ? Then this leaves me to wonder about the gear box ? With the obvious coating of greasy old fluid caked all over the bottom engine area and the ps pump and gearbox from leakage now I can't determine if it could really be the gear box ? But I have no slop in steering so maybe not. What is the best way to tell ?
My dilemma is if I take chance and install new pump and get it filthy and put it into mechanical use and it don't fix it the I'm stick with a no return
