Rear Brake Shoes Replacement

'94 B2300

I am going to replace my rear brake shoes. The last replacement was more than 10 years ago. Do I need to replace the drums as well?

You will need to have them measured. Any shop that does brakes can measure them for you. Most auto parts stores can do it also. If they are in spec and can be turned you are good to go.

Around here, the price for turning a drum is within a few dollars of buying new.

Tried to replace the rear brake drums and shoes, wanted to replace the wheel cylinders as well. The nut for the brake line would not come off, used PB blaster, did not help at all. Any good suggestions?

Are you using a Line Wrench? Those usually crack them loose pretty easy. If you have already stripped it even a little bit the line wrench won't work and you may end up using vise grips.

Yep, I tried to use a line wrench with no luck. The nut at this point is not stripped. What's next? Can I cut the line and use the compression fitting to rebuild the connection to the wheel cylinder.

You can cut the line but you will need to replace the line from the wheel cylinder to the junction. The compression fittings will not hold pressure. You need the double flared ends. You can get the brake line in many lengths with the ends already done you just need to bend the line witch is pretty easy. The tool to do it correctly is fairly inexpensive. I paid a lot for mine but I have done MANY brake and fuel lines over the years! LOL. Don't spend a lot if you are only doing this once!

Anyway, I changed out the brakes and all the springs, etc ... except the wheel cylinders( since they are still good). The brake replacement was quite easy ... the first one took me an hour but the second one was quick and easy. Thank you all.
