The problem is that the temp gauge its not stuck but in fact:

normal: C - - - - -| - - - - - H
mine: C - \-- - - - - - - - H


You can see whats wrong, i mean when the car its cold when it stay low till it heats up but the gauge doesnt not go to the middle.

i believe that When it goes to what in a working right gauge is normal mine ranger is hot.

So i read here that maybe cleaning the sensor cable and socket will fix it, but i dont know where is that, i found this:



Is that the one?

do you get heat from the heater? my temp gauge has always read on the cold side, but it's up to normal temp.

The problem is that the gauge works i think, but in a wrong way i mean, when mine is near the "N" of "normal" i know the truck is hot (because i hear the fan revving)


EDIT: i checked if the A/C on hot works and it does.

 

Mine is the same way. I've had numerous dealerships tell me its normal for our trucks. I've also been told that the difference bwteen the C and H on the gauge is only about 10 degrees.

 

Thanks but that cant be right i mean every other truck is normal.

And i have reasons to believe that when mine gauge is on the o in "Normal" (middle of the gauge) the truck is running hot.

 

well I agree, mine RARELY gets up halfway, and thats only when I'm idling with the A/C running full blast for an extended period. Normally it never gets above 1/4 of the way up.

It may not be "normal" compared to other trucks, but on our rangers I do believe it is normal. They are just designed that way.

 

x2 especilly now that its getting colder...my 95 always read on the cold side...just barely went into the normal range but it would throw heat no problem

I bought my daughter a '93 Ranger with the 2.3 a couple of years ago. She was in auto tech class in high school last year so I had her flush the radiator, replace the T-stat, plugs, wire and a few other similar type maintenance items, in class under the teachers watch. Her temp gauge never got above the C before or after. The truck only has 40,000 miles on it and it sat for several years before we got it.

Now that the weather has cooled off (actually turned cold) she has no heat. The temp gauge barely moves. The radiator doesn't get hot, the engine doesn't get hot, the hoses don't get hot. You will get a little heat when you are driving but when you stop and it's at idle, no heat.

I would normally think that the t-stat was stuck open but it was replaced less than a year ago.

Replace it again? It is a pain to replace on that motor!

 

yeah i repleced my t-stat last year too, and my temp guage stays cold and doesn't move so idk if its the heat sending unit or the guage, but my truck does throw out heat

 

and i don't kknow were the heat sending unit is so if any of you know and can let me know that would be nice so i can check it.

We need a little bit more than "it dosen't work" Do you have heat while driving? are your RAD hoses getting hot? has the truck ever had a coolant flush? has it ever sat for a long period of time? Does your gauge move at all?

 

well the heat doesn't work at all while driving or in idle.. the RAD hose get hot and the flush was done 2 months ago. and it didn't for a long time and the temp gauge goes in the middle of H and C while its at a red light then it goes back to normal when i start to drive again.

 

Well replaced the thermostat again this weekend, still no heat. I little warm air comes out the vents but no real heat. Like a said above, the temp gauge may get to the "C", neither the radiator, the hoses, or the engine get hot. They get a little warm but not hot.

I've thought about replace the water pump but if it was not working I would think that the engine would get hot and likely overheat.

Any suggestions?

 

Oh, one other thing. The parts store says that the stock thermostat is a 195 degree thermostat and that's what I've been putting back in it. Does that sound right?

 

i've seen trucks that have this scenario with little or no heat and the culprit was bad head gaskets!! this was on diesels

 

I just went through the same situation with my 98. Turned out that the heater core was plugged. I back flushed the system and now everything works fine. Before the flush my heater didn't work at all, the temp gauge would go up and down at random times, and my gas mileage got worse the colder the outside temp got.

Bottom line: check the heater hoses and if both don't get hot it's the heater core.

I have a 91 ranger and ever since ive had it the temp gauge hasnt moved i replaced the sending unit and that didnt help so i bought an aftermarket temp gauge and it hasnt moved until one day i was 4wheelin in it and it got so hot that the radiator cap had to release pressure but then the temp guage only went to about 110 degreese what could be the problem??

Go to a higher temp stat and it should fix it. I believe stock is 190 I replaced with a 195 to fix the same issue.

justin, did you replace the sensor too, i'm replacing both the sensor and the sender tomorrow, so hopefully that works, i mean my guage sticks right below normal, sticks all the time off or on, and last night after i had just driven like 40 miles in all i decided to drop to cold, so i think mine may be the sender

 

oh and jt, if you coud post some more info on that stat, that would be nice like a website link or a brand name, thanks
