I have a 2001 ford ranger 4cy 2.5l

It is wayyy to slow, more slower than normal. I believe something is wrong with it but im not too sure. It sounds like theres a hole in the exhaust because it sounds like i've added a muffler but i have not. it's stock... could that rob a lot of my horse power? i believe theres a hole in the exhaust near the engine but im not too sure, anyone have any suggestions? i was thinking about putting a cold air intake on it, but does anyone know about the air mass meter? i took the air filter out to see something, and when i stopped the truck died, im sure its because the computer knew it was getting to much air and shut off, but does this effect the intake that i want to put on it( and does anyone know where i can find a cheaper intake for my 2.5l? )

No idea about the exhaust problem. Not quite sure what your asking with the intake question. Yes the truck will die when you pull the filter off while its running, way too much air being sucked in. All an aftermarket intake is is a replacement for your stock intake and is more effiecient and adds power and most of the time some added miles per gallon.

 

I wouldn't get an intake unless you plan on going the fulll way. See, I bought an intake for my truck(3.0 L) but a few months later I thought to myself "well, my next big mod willl either be a 4.0/5/0 or a 4" superlift and some big meats". So, I bought a part that won't fit on any other truck, and would be pretty hard to sell to anyone. It does make a cool sound though!

How many miles are on the truck? Is there a check engine light on? If you think something is wrong, you need to track down the problem and fix it instead of trying to compensate for it with additional parts.

 

66,000 miles, yeah i really just wanted the cool noise with the intake, it was kinda changing the subject at the time lol, but yeah im pretty sure it just has a hole in the exhaust somewhere, my 4th period in school is auto mechanics, ill just take it in there lift it and see if theres something wrong, and no theres no check engine light. Pinecone said if there was a hole before the catalicitic converter there would be a check engine light, so im supposing the hole is after it.

Hey man I have a 4 banger to and i can tell you now its not going to be as fast as a 6. But to add more horsepower to do what i did and get an intake, K&N airfilter (this will allow more air flow), and a flowmaster 40 series exaust it will also give you more horse power and make it sound alot better then it does now. feel free to pm me

well I think theres theres gotta be some way these little 2.3 litter engines haul a**.........I'm mean freaking civics can be fast if done up right....But i'm so ticked off b/c where I live we got hills...LOTS of them ill have 10-18 cars behind me goin up them so i gotta buddy w/ the same motor and his freaking flies and his is an auto....so I guess if I did buy a new ranger i would possible go w/ a 4-cyl.....

You could always get a turbo from a Thunderbird Turbo Coupe or SVO Mustang too. That would require some beefing up of the internal parts though...so it's a little more than just bolting the turbo on.

 

I do that but it sound like the motors gonna come flying in to my seat...

BTW the only way my truck peels out is w/ wet or loose gravel.......On dry pavment it won't ever happen.....

 

idk about you guys but my 2.3 had alot of *****..
now.. the one im driving now.. is a POS! it wont do 70.. 65 if im lucky.
my 97 would burnout like it was nothing.. oh how i miss it

 

acully if you DO NOT turn the boost up over the stock boost. you wont have to to beef it up. the thunderbird turbo coupe got alot of the truck parts in its engine as "beef" up being that the car engine of the 2.3L wasnt as stong the ranger parts where stronger because it was made as a truck.

 

My 2.3 5 speed will roast them on dry pavement. Stock :). Its been well maintained tho

hondas weight alot less than our trucks, and they have alot less drivetrain HP losses, being FWD.

4 cylinder truck is kind of an oxymoron.

My little brother has a '01 2.5L XL ranger....Yes...his truck can peel the tires like crazy on dry pavement, but not as good as my 4.0L. His truck can also do donuts and sometimes bark them into 3rd gear. His truck can even drift around slightly wet surfaces. Where my truck cannot (weight, tire size are the causes) So what they said....is correct. The 2.3L DOHC are way better (imo) than the 2.5. And guys, a 119hp engine don't compair to the 4.0L.

I'd bring out truck in for the 60k tune up. Have the dealer check it out if it is slower than normal.

Suggestion: Fix the problem and sell the truck for a 4.0L, unless money is an issue which theres no big deal there. No need to buy a new/upgraded truck.

Mods: Go all the way in regards of intake setup. Don't buy a cone filter conversion that are like $30 on ebay or Autozone. Get a K&N 57 series/FIPK2 intake system. More horse power and better mileage too. Thats about $200 off ebay. Throw on a performance exhust, Gibson makes a decent kit, the cheapest way I find is buying a muffler and having a shop redo the piping. About $300or so(dont know for sure) for the Gibson, My exhaust set up was total of $220($130 pipe & hang, $65 Flowmaster, $25 chrome tip). You could get a computer tuner, like a Bamachips Tuner for around $350-400.

You don't need secrets, my 3.0 has 5.13 gears and 38's, lol my 4 wheelers could out run this thing.
