Ball Joint Replacement Help

I have a 1998 4x4 and am replacing the upper and lower ball joints on both sides. While removing the knuckle on the drivers side from the lower ball joint the axle shaft came out of the back of the hub. I was able to push it back into the hub easily, however, I am wondering if that was the right thing to do. Has removing the axle caused damage to my hub/bearings? Is there anything I need to do to properly seal it?

Thanks,

Marc

remove the PVH hub and inspect. there should have been an orange snap ring that holds the CV axle into the hub bearing
