newbie with 4wd problems

i have a 2000 4.0l v6 with 4wd. its the electronic control on the dash, i havent done any suspension or gearing upgrades as of yet, but we went out to the river today and i buried my rearend up to the axles at least 3 times before i could get jerked out. basically my 4wd is not engaging. im not getting any grinding or noised out of any of my components, which leads me to think the electronic control to engage the drivetrain together with front if messed up. anybody had that thing crap out? or even know what im talking about? two-wheel drive rangers suck...

wheres it at? a guy helping me pull it out (the truck) said his son had a simular model ranger and he'd have to hit the motor with a screwdriver a couple times and he'd have no more probs... but thats rednecks for ya

Underneath the truck it's connected to the transfer case held on by three bolts I beleive. It's got an electrical connector coming from it. You'll know it when you see it.

my 4WD died too. its was the switch and the control module that had fried. it was my fault though but it was under warranty. i just left out the part where it was my fault

Edit: Fixed bad link below...

There's a great article on renewing the electronic transfer case on http://www.explorerforum.com

Take a look over there and it will explain everything, I do believe.
