John I'm pretty sure I heard someone talking on GE before about how thin the sidewalls are on the Dunlop Mud Rovers. You beat the hell out of your tires making off camber turns and such. What kind of deal could you haggle on 35 coopers? The dunlops would be better suited on a truck like mine that only sees off roading a few times a year unlike yours that sees it a few times a month.

AHHHRRRGGHHHH!!!! Not to be torturing me!
No Firesign Theatre fans out there, are there? Oh well... Well, since I really can't afford anything I really want, I guess I'll just wait it out until I sell some things and what not and build up my cash. 4 35" Cooper S/T's, installed, will be somewhere in the vicinity of $700. I may just get 2 of these for the rear as soon as I can. I've been doing more research on the Baja Claw Radials and it really seems like the consensus is that their performance in mud is undistinguished. I think they're out of the picture entirely from my original options. They sure look cool, but if I'm going with an "all around" tire, the S/T's still seem the better idea. Problem is, I really want a mud tire -- but I don't want to spend as much as some of them would cost, so I'm looking for my usual compromises on the issue. Guess I'm not far enough along in that process to really make up my mind. I appreciate all the input though! Still thinking about the Dunlops and the Coopers and staying at 35" unless I change my mind! |
33" Coopers....I'm not a fan of Dunlop...can't remember why tho
|
I'm sure you've considered this, but what about getting another set of 'cheapie' rims and mounting your 'serious' off-road tires on them. It'll cost you a bit more up front, but then you can get exactly what you want for off-road and have something entirely different (ie the 35" BFGs you already have) for street use. Or at least such a setup for the drive axle. If anyone should probably be running such a setup I'd imagine it would be you..
|
If your 35's are that worn you need to do something and if this seems like a good deal value to price then jump on it.
|
I choose whichever will get me back my full-size spare!

I'm always a wait and see and get the "better" option down the road. I like Bubbas idea of getting the extra set of rims/tires for serious stuff and sticking with stockers for the not serious stuff.
Thats what Neil's doing and what I'd do if I was getting crazy with my truck like that too! |
Too much money and effort involved in that for now -- I just want to put some tires on and leave them there, lol.
|
Get the 35" dunlops. If you get 33's, you'll wish you had gotten 35's. Everyone i know that gets 33's ends up regretting not getting 35's.
And if you air-down at all, those 33's become even smaller. |
A very good point.
Hey, what did you have to do to that Wagoneer 44 to make it fit? Is the width really far off for our trucks and did you cut it down? What did you do for brakes? Should I start another topic to ask you that, lol! |
what bout ProComp MTs? they go on sale buy 3 get one free every now and they and IMO they rock.
|
They're really supposed to be pretty good. I haven't priced them and who knows if I can wait for the sale, lol! But thanks for that -- I'd kind of forgot about them. For sure I wouldn't get them at full price I don't think.
|
look for an A & A auto in ur area, they have em on sale twice a year. plus if u find a price cheaper online they'll match it. i got 4 33x12.50x15s for $485 shipped. i did mount and balance them myself here at school however. the center lugs are siped for awsome traction in the snow/rain/sleet and they are good off-road.
i also heard nothing but good about the Mud Rovers. oh ya, what about the General Grabber MTs? |

Ha ha! Yes, I did think it was. Well, it's what I want to do in 2 years, so I'd like to see what you do in the hopes I can do something similar eventually.

O i will take tons of pictures, i have the axle compeletely torn down right now, come monday i'm ordering the gears and the full spool. Then the master install kit and all new seals/brake parts. When i get it re-assembled i will start cutting off the IFS...
|
full spool in the front?
|
of course
|
heres what i say.....air down the 35" A/T's and let ur locker do te work for u......in my blazer i'v got 35's A/t's up front and 36 TSL/SX's in the back and i'll be honest with you i'm very impressed with the TSL's but every time they bury up te a/ts's are the ones doing the work.... my A/T's are worn down alot...but i'd say tat stick to te 35's and air them down to a 33 size you'll be very impressed
|
ur brave with a spool up front
skyjacker, why u got mismatch sized meats? |
Mismatched like that, 4WD would bury the rear as they are working harder. There's NO WAY BFG A/T's are better than TSL's in sloppy stuff. Thanks for the advice but no way these BFG's are staying on the rear for mud, aired down or not.
A SPOOL IN THE FRONT!!!!! Guess you won't be driving on the street. Also, better get ready for some serious breakage on a regular basis. That's gonna' load up EVERYTHING: axle, gears, u-joints -- everything. Whew, you're braver than I. Spooled rears are one thing -- spooled fronts are another! |
Do people not know what lock-out hubs are? Thats how you drive on the road...
|
Ha ha! True -- but there are times offroad when full steering differentiation might be nice. I wasn't thinking about hubs though -- you're right. That's what comes from driving 4x2 all the time...
|
really now, i didnt know thats what lock outs were for. ur still gunna suffer for some serious breakage when something lets go. and turning is gunna suck...but i guess ur gunna get out and unlock one hub to make turns everytime, right...
