Painting over Chrome rims.

My ranger has some chromes rims in nasty shape, Two of them have spots where the chrome has flaked off and has rusted. I'm looking to get some black rims, But the rims I have are about the style rim I've been looking at. Can I paint on the chrome if I scuff it up good and use primer, Or will the chrome have to be removed for the paint to stick. I'm not looking into power-coating them, just a good primer, -paint and clear coat so they will look decent. After they're painted I was gonna put the smooth chrome bolt covers onto it. Also do you guys think a black wheel would look decent on this truck

Prep is your key. Get them as clean as you possible can before you apply any paint.

They will if you scuff them. Regardless of your primer, paint doesn't stick well to chrome. If you are serious about painting them, take at the very least a scotch brite pad, but preferably a low grit sandpaper and scuff them up good. Then prime. If you are going rattle can, get Rustoleum primer and paint. I like it. Consider using High Temp paint for your primer because your wheels can get hot driving, braking, and that will help keep the paint from flaking off when the wheel gets hot.

Remember the rule of spray paint. Several light coats beat two heavy coats. Smooth back and forth motion. You can make spray paint look good. I say do it. Black will look good.

Do you know how cheap new steel wheels are?? We put those exact rims on my dad's(now brother's) ranger.....$40 ea brand new. IMO, too much hassle. Just get new ones.

Just an opinion.

but...if you do paint the lips and center black, with new stainless screws....would look killer!

Ill probably do it in the next few days or so. Ill make sure to post pics. I Could just use my air spray gun, but I may end up using spray cans instead. Anyone know where I can get the smooth middle caps? Or somebody that has a set I can get off of em?

I know they're cheap, I been looking around online and such. But I'm not sure how they will look on the truck. I think they will look pretty good, but I figure this way, If I decide I don't like it, I didn't spend a whole lot painting them so I wont have to deal With getting rid of black rims and buying new chrome ones. I decided Im going to Use my air paint gun, so in the next day or so I'll probably get a few cans of paint and get to work.
