Painting stock 15 inch wheels

I think I'm going to paint the 7 spoke painted stock wheels I have on my truck. I searched and I found two examples and I think I have a pretty good grasp of how to do it, but I was wondering if a gunmetal gray (Duplicolor wheel coating Graphite) would look good on my sonic blue truck. The paint looks alot like DSG. I might even consider the Duplicolor Black.

Example out in the sun.

Here they are on strakill's truck, example of stock

I would also be painting the centercaps. How would I go about removing and replacing wheel weights, or is this even necessary?

My Truck, for reference. I have the chrome covers btw.

Thanks

I took the wheel weights off and had them rebalanced after I painted them. I think black would look much better with the blue. I don't know how the duplicolor holds up but the Rustoleum Rust Proof has held up extremely well on mine.

thanks, I think I'll photoshop them later today when i'm back from school. Any pics of your painted wheels? For some reason I still think the graphite would look really good, but it's kind of a hit or miss.

I used rustoluem on my trucks rims and they look great. And I painted over my weights cuz I got a snap on Chrome lip.

After school I will post a pic of my rims

I like that, looks really good on that truck. Any input on the graphite color?

DSFD506 01-20-2010 04:35 PM

I'm not digging the graphite but that's just me.

Black1987 01-20-2010 05:19 PM

how r u guys posting such big pictures? i tried to post a pic of my trucks rims and i cant seem to figures it out

blue and gunmetal is win. duplicolor wheel enamel also holds up well, its all in the prep. good rule of thumb is if you spend more time painting then prepping your doing it wrong

Search for Tyler Crim aka Ranger boy 101 I think is his name on here. He did the same thing.

coleary15 01-20-2010 05:36 PM

i have the graphite color and its good as long as you put on atleast 3 coats and plenty of hard clear

FRJR 01-20-2010 05:43 PM

I think I may go with the graphite. For the wheel weights, could I take them off somehow and then mark them on the masking and possibly put them back on after the paint job? How would I do that? If I do this, I'll write a how to of the process. Also, which Duplicolor primer would you recommend? The self etching or the sandable primer?

I did the photoshop I said I would do earlier. This is about the best I could do for the graphite.

EricRanger 01-21-2010 09:42 PM

I think you should do the 7 spoke in black. Here how mine turned out.

i would just sand your wheels and paint over that unless they are really beat and need a primer coat self etching is more for raw metal.

FRJR 01-22-2010 02:20 PM

Alright, thanks. I won't use self etching. I like how the photoshop turned out. I got a four day weekend coming up soon so i'll probably do it then. If I don't like the graphite i'll just do the black. shouldn't be hard.

Black1987 01-22-2010 04:14 PM

all i did to paint my rims is wipe them off with a rape and water, let them dry a day in the sun and then used a flat balck as a primer and after that dried i used the gloss back to make the rims the color i wanted

OneTireFire 03-17-2010 08:25 AM

did any of you have to sand your rims first

Black1987 03-17-2010 12:59 PM

Well I first gave them a good cleaning off the truck and then I let them dry, wiped them off and after that I applied like 2 coats of flat black as a base then 2 coats of gloss black

02_xlt 03-17-2010 01:53 PM

i wanna do my rims black so bad, but theyre in too bad of shape to paint :/

Black1987 03-17-2010 02:02 PM

Mine looked so bad. It looked like they haven't been washed in years and they were really dirty and like a little oiley. But they turned out nice. I can take a close up pic right now if u would like to c them
