Researching tires for 3rd gen explorer...Toyo/BFG/General

I was just doing a little research on which tires I'm going to get - I was going to get 265/70s - but after a little more looking today, I decided to go with 265/75/16s on my 05 V6 XLT. I was originally going to get General AT2s - But then the price went up and availability went down so I decided against it. Today I found the Toyo Open Country ATs - seem to look pretty good, have a 50k mile warranty and the price is pretty good. I'd like the BFGs but they're just too damned expensive. Just to make sure on them, I pulled the specs on them - just curious about 32nds, weight, etc. The Toyos weigh in at 39lbs, 13 32nds. Generals weigh in at 57lbs & 17 32nds. BFG TKOs weighed in at 52lbs and 14 32nds. THinking about gas mileage and wear as I increase the size of the tire and un-sprung weight, I think the toyos are the way to go. Thoughts??

Depends on the ply rating I had them on my 96 3/4 ton dodge ram and towed around 6,500 plus the truck weight almost daily and loved them .
My truck was super rough , after I got the toyos it was like a cadilac and they handle decent off road in red clay , caliche rock and sand . Theye weart good to my uncle just got over 65K from his . I think youll really like the toyos .

well, i'm mainly on-road but looking for something that looks a little nicer/larger/aggressive than the 235/75/16 Michelin x-terrains that I have now. So if you think they'll last pretty good, probably go with those...

Hi I'm thinking of getting some new rubbers too, I was wondering if 265/75/16 is going to rub at any time. Anyone know? Thanks.

I had a bad experience with Toyos, they wore for sh*t and they would NEVER balance, I did love the traction though. They were good in the rain and snow, and in the dirt on my 2wd truck. Maybe I had a bad set or something, but like I said, I had some problems.

Ryan, those tires are going to be too big without some kind of lift.

Ok. I gotta say, you pay for what you get. DTholmanmax, those Michelins you got on there are a well made tire, and the BF's are built to the same tolerances. Sometimes by Michelin in one of their factories. I doubt any other tire company builds to the tolerances of Michelin, or BFG, the extra cost is all in quality.

And a side note (sorry didn't mean to jack your thread), with no lift and 16" rims what size isn't going to rub? It's got 255/70s on now IIRC.

Ryan those will fit your 4x4 07 with no problems.

I ran them on my 03 4wd and had no issues at all.

Zack, I always thought the 75's were too tall, and rubbed in some situations.

that would be the 285s.

265/75/16s are a 31.8x10.2x16 give or take per manufacturer.

there are people running a 32x11.5x15 all day long on this site with no lift.
