I am gonna get a set of Coopper STT's and I was just wondering who the best is to get them through...

 

Get the new cooper tire...

 

Everywhere. But you have to shop for price. Cooper sells through tire stores, tire chains, and mom-and-pop service stations all over the country. Go to their website and I think they have a find-a-dealer link there somewhere.

The STT got a pretty good write-up in 4 Wheel Offroad magazine in the most recent issue. They have new, bigger sizes available. Not good for rock crawling, though -- but it excelled in mud and general offroad stuff.

 

I got mine at Discount tire man do I miss those tires they ROCKED alot!!!!

 

Like the M/T Baja Claws and some other tires, there are both bias ply and radial versions of the STT. The bias ply version is available in only limited sizes, and from what I see, the radial version lacks sojme of the features of the bias ply version.

Yes I had these tires

they were VERY good tire never clumped up very good at self cleaning them selfs. also got VERY good life out of them about 43000 before i got my BFG's. yes they are a little loud but thats what the radio is for.

I paid about $140 apiece for the S/T's, mounted and balanced in the 31x10.5x15 size. But that's with a 10% extra discount I get because my company deals with them. Not sure what they're going for now.

I've got a call in to get a price for just 2 S/T's (not STT's) in 35x12.5x15 for the rear of my truck. I'm going to get those as soon as I can, and buy 2 more in the fall. I can use one of the BFG's as a "full size" 35" spare.

 

no 265x75x16. i have always had 16's which I will never get agian.

mine were precial order 265x75x16 always seems to be special order . they were $550 I get a deal on these normally for 265x75x16 is $675

 

Hmmm. $140-170, the numbers it sounds like you guys are throwing around is pretty steep for a set. NTB quotes as low as $110/ea for 31x10.5x15 BFG ATs in my area. .. They do not apear to offer Cooper tires.

BFG A/T's do not come close to Coopers S/T and STT for traction, and the Cooper sidewalls are heavier. Also, NTB does not quote with mounting and balancing. My dealer always states it all.

You get what you pay for. BFG A/T's are good -- for an A/T. But A/T's just do not have the traction of "specialty" tires with bigger lugs and A/T's in general have thinner sidewalls.

Also, make sure the ones they quoted are LT rated. Someone got some Coopers cheaper by getting the P type tire, which has even thinner sidewalls.

 

So Cooper does not make a tire that is more directly compeditive (especially w/ regard to price) w/ the BFG AT??

 

Yes, the Discover A/T or maybe the Mickey Thompson or **** Cepek A/T designs (which are made by Cooper -- Cooper owns both those companies). If you want more traction in mud and what not than the really close tread spacing of the BFG can provide, then you don't want an A/T. Cooper's new ATR is an improvement over the originall Discoverer A/T as well and probably is replacing it entirely. Don't know because I have no use for a strictly "A/T" style design.

And it depends on what you mean by competitive -- you won't get those tires ON your truck for $110. Another thing NTB sometimes does is neglects to quote the federal excise tax on the tires. Look online at the lowest prices and you'll see $110 is probably not a real price when everything is figured in.

If you want to know what Cooper has, why don't you investigate it? I have, but my answers aren't going to satisfy you. You need to see the tires and get prices yourself in YOUR area from the lowest priced dealer. Every area has different "base price" zones based on the local economy, etc.

 

i had discoverer a/t's om my bronco and when im done with the BFG's im gonna get another set of coopers... the BFG's are awesome but i liked my coopers better... and i dont mind paying more for a tire made in america

 

I'm actually trying to. BFG has their products marketed in such a manner that I pretty well understand the point and intent of each tire. For example the Long Trail and Rugged Trail products are more all-season road tires, w/ longer tread life, better street handling and smoother ride. Then the MT's are near polar opposites; great in mud and very low traction situations, but poor(er) tread life and road handling. Definitely not an option for me as I need best of both worlds. Then the ATs are somewhere in the middle, a comfortable comprimise. And from what I've experienced, a great performer for the duty I ask of it.

Now the Coopers' are a little less familiar to me, and seem less straight forward. The STT Radial strikes me as a highly agressive, nearly a MT tire. W/ the Discover AT or ATR being more of a street all-season radial. So does that make the S/T like you have the middle ground?! But then the STT Radial specifically cites the long tread-life compound, indicating that that tire actually has the best tread life characteristics..

I'm not trying to pick a fight John. I'm legitimately asking for your opinion. I know you did the leg work on this bigtime a few years back and was asking for your opinion based on what you read and saw. I won't be in the tire market for quite some time, but when I do go for it, I'd like to know as much as possible.. Was hoping you'd lend some commentary..

The 'buy American' factor comes into play here. It seems clear that Cooper makes nearly all their rubber here in the US, while it's somewhat more mirky in the BFG case.

What is the sidewall thickness like? Some of their "off brand" are not so tough. Don't know about MasterCraft. Did you see any reviews anywhere? That's a pretty good alternative, but I wonder if they have 35's?

Okay, they do have 35's in that. I may ask my dealer about them as I believe he does sell them.

when you guys say "oh cooper pwns this brand" and "cooper owns that brand" I hope you realize its nt saying much. basically theres three tire cmpanies that own everything: Michelin, Goodyear and Bridgestone. so saying that "cooper owns _____" is only going so far up on the tire hierarchy.

kinda the same with aftermarket steel wheels too...

Do they even make them in 37's? I know BFG only just started makin M/T's in 37x12.50...
